No offense, Ghost Rider fans, but there?s no way you?d be seeing a Rider sequel this weekend if Nicolas Cage hadn't willed the movie into existence. Crunch the numbers. The original earned $115 million in the U.S., and another $112M around the globe. Decent, but definitely not a number that commands a sequel. And that Rotten Tomatoes grade? How does 26% Fresh sound?
But Cage has more than enough clout to push a passion project or two forward, and so we?re gearing up for Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance, another chance to see Nicolas Cage don the big flaming skull. It should have been someone else ? anyone else. In fact, we came up with six superheroes who deserved a feature-length film before we were asked to endure another Ghost Rider film. Some are mighty beings with sequels or franchise reboots in the creative pipeline. Others were mistreated in previous films, and are begging for a second chance. Would you like to see new movies with any of these characters? All of them? Be sure to let us know in the comments section below:
Catwoman
My first exposure to Catwoman was the incredible Michelle Pfeiffer's scintillating turn in Tim Burton's moody Batman Returns. I was a grade-schooler at the time, and was in absolute, drop-jawed awe of Pfeiffer's fearless, fierce and undeniably female feline fiend. She was lithe and little next to Michael Keaton's burly Batman, yet proved a well-matched and fearsome foe with her whip skills and nine lives. I yearned for her to resurface in future Batman movies. Yet it took 12 long years for the incomparable Catwoman to finally return to the screen, and in her own movie starring Oscar-winner Halle Berry no less! Of course this Catwoman was entirely dreadful, and we should all agree as a society to forget this abomination ever happened so that Catwoman can rise from the dead once more and get the movie she's long deserved. While we're at it, why not bring along some other Gotham gals for the ride? Just imagine what awesome action set pieces and incredible banter could be created if filmmakers centered a supervillain adventure on Catwoman and her Gotham City Sirens sisters, Poison Ivy -- another villainess burned by dumb movie adaptations -- and the wild card Harley Quinn! And with Anne Hathaway donning the ears and catsuit in this summer's Dark Knight Rises, it seems a better time than ever to give Catwoman a feature reboot/rebirth of her own.
Daredevil
There?s a great film buried somewhere in Mark Steven Johnson?s Daredevil, Hollywood?s 2003 introduction to Marvel?s Man Without Fear. In fact, the director?s cut beefs up subplots and characterizations that were anemic in the theatrical cut, and hinted at what Daredevil might have been if too many chefs didn?t stick their fingers into Hell?s Kitchen. I?m even a fan of the casting. Ben Affleck was a stoic Matt Murdock. Jennifer Garner was a feisty Elektra. And Colin Farrell was perfectly gonzo as Bullseye. But Marvel and Fox whiffed on one key decision, and they should rectify it in time for a Daredevil reboot: Hand the keys over to Kevin Smith. The comic geek made a cameo appearance as Jack Kirby in the original. He should have been directing. Smith often writes for Marvel?s Daredevil comics. He knows the vengeful hero inside and out. He understands the complexities of Murdock?s moral compass, and could even handle the brutal Karen Page storyline ? a high point of Daredevil literature ? with wit and sorrow. The first Daredevil wasn?t a nightmare. But task Smith with screenwriting and directing duties on a reboot, and fans will be treated to the Daredevil movie of their dreams.
Spawn
Say what you will about the worst of the superhero genre ? be it Spider-Man 3, The Fantastic Four, Daredevil or Elektra. They all have one key element that places them above director Mark A.Z. Dipp??s Spawn: they all have solid special effects. In addition to the fact that Spawn is terribly directed, features some pretty awful performances, and has a complete mess of a story, what really hurts the film is how terribly it has aged. Made back in 1997 with a budget of only $40 million, the effects ? which may have been solid for their time -- are earth-shatteringly ugly. It?s so bad that you can practically see the pixels in the character?s famous flowing cape. But that?s all the more reason why the character is so well-suited for a reboot. Comic book movies are as popular as ever, meaning that the project could get a worthy budget. Special effects have advanced so far in recent years that Spawn?s costume and characters (like Violator, for example) can actually look photo-realistic. Also, thanks to Christopher Nolan?s Batman series, Hollywood is in love with dark, gritty characters right now. Who is darker and grittier than a mercenary who is murdered, sent to hell, and gains Hellspawn powers? No one. Bring back Spawn!
Venom
Back when Sam Raimi was still attached to direct Spider-Man 4, there was a lot of heat regarding a possible Venom spin-off. Academy Award nominee Gary Ross was even attached to direct a script written by the fantastic pair of Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick (Zombieland), until the whole thing crumbled in unison with S-M4 and Ross moved on to Hunger Games. However, just because that version of the film wound up as collateral damage doesn?t mean the whole notion of a Venom spin-off should be thrown away. In fact, the success of Chroncicle, as well as a few phenomenal comics by Brian Azzarello (?Joker? and ?Lex Luthor: Man of Steel?), shows that there?s certainly a market for the villain?s story. And in an industry so obsessed with the production of comic book movies, this would offer a welcome counter-narrative to the onslaught of heroic origins. On top of all of these reasons, Eddie Brock is a fascinating character complete with a story that perfectly parallels that of our wall crawler. With a rebooted Spider-Man headed towards theaters, the films could work in tandem and compliment each other. Now, we just need to convince David Fincher or Darren Aronofsky that this should be the dark comic book film either of them finally makes, because Venom deserves their talent.
The Fantastic Four
Tim Story?s two Fantastic Four efforts weren?t, for lack of a better word, fantastic. While Rise of the Silver Surfer was an improvement over its predecessor, both films hedged their bets by aiming for a simple, adolescent audience. Chris Evans might have been a suitable Human Torch, but we can all agree he?s much more effective as Marvel?s square-jawed patriot, Captain America. I?m still not sure how a movie that came out only four years before Avatar and a full six years after The Matrix can consider Michael Chiklis? Thing suit an acceptable special effect. And the less we say about bland Jessica Alba as Sue Storm, aka The Invisible Woman, the better. This team deserves a fresh take, and multiple films have shown that, in the right hands, a story about super-powered family members can really soar. Brad Bird?s animated The Incredibles was a far superior Fantastic Four-inspired story. The low-budget Chronicle demonstrated how imagination and a passionate screenplay can triumph over limited funds and not-so-special effects. And Joss Whedon?s gearing up to tell the mother of all mash-up thrillers this summer with The Avengers. If he pulls it off, the next project Fox needs to focus on is a rebooted Four-- which, as it turns out, may very well be directed by Chronicle's own Josh Trank. There?s a library of brilliant stories waiting to be told with these iconic heroes at the helm. Find the right filmmaker, and give Fantastic Four a chance.
Deadpool
The character of Wade Wilson, or Deadpool, showed up in the Gavin Hood directed X-Men Origins: Wolverine, but that rendition is hardly the merc with the mouth that we?ve all come to love from Rob Liefeld's comics. In fact, that incarnation of the fast-talking anti-hero was so despised by fans and non-fans alike that a whole other character name (or meme) has been created to disassociated Deadpool from the film?s version, dubbed ?Barakapool.? (Mortal Kombat fans will get a chuckle out of that.) Obviously, since the comic-book character was so poorly realized in his first on-screen appearance, he certainly deserves another shot, with or without Ryan Reynolds on board to star. Listen, I?m a huge Reynolds fan, but even I think that a recast might be necessary to shake the bad taste that Wolverine left in fans? mouths. May I suggest the gabby Adam Brody as a possible replacement? Regardless, with Reynolds or Brody on board, the script from Reese and Wernick (yep, those boys again) is apparently a work of hard-R genius and perfectly captures the violent irreverence or the self-referential character. Robert Rodriguez was also attached to the project at one point but has since surrendered directing duties to newcomer Tim Miller. Unfortunately, the longer the project rests in limbo -- and the less big names it attracts (sorry, Tim Miller) -- it?s more and more likely that Deadpool won?t be seeing the light of day anytime soon. And that?s a real shame, because of all the comic book properties out there, it definitely should. Oh, and I hate his other work, but Timur Bekmambetov would be perfect to direct (sorry, Tim Miller).
ATHENS/BERLIN (Reuters) ? Greece said on Thursday it had found extra budget savings demanded by its international lenders, suggesting a new rescue package is within reach even though acrimony simmered between Athens and its European partners.
Greece is scrambling to clinch the 130 billion euro ($170 billion) bailout at a meeting of euro zone finance ministers on Monday to avert a chaotic default when 14.5 billion euros in debt repayments fall due on March 20.
Euro zone paymaster Germany indicated that a proposal to stagger the bailout and withhold part until after a Greek election in April was no longer on the table.
But a source in the German ruling coalition, speaking after talks with the German finance ministry, said some outstanding issues remained, including the possibility of an ring-fenced account for debt redemption payments and better controls of Greece's efforts to reduce spending.
Athens is coming up against rising frustration among some euro zone members at what they see as a trend of Greek political leaders doing the minimum possible at the last possible moment since the country was first bailed out in 2010.
Critics say the same applies to the euro zone's crisis response over the last two years.
Greek government sources said Athens had agreed with the EU and IMF how to fill the 325 million euro hole in a set of 3.3 billion euros in budget cuts adopted on Monday as rioters torched and looted buildings in the capital.
Two sources said 100 million euros would come from defense cuts, about 90 million by bringing forward some public sector wage reductions and another 135 million would be taken from the health, labor and interior ministries.
European shares recovered losses and safe haven German Bunds hit session lows in response.
The latest bout in the grueling debt crisis is straining relations between Athens and its euro zone partners to breaking point.
Faced with calls for greater scrutiny of Greece's implementation of the deal, one Greek cabinet member lashed out on Thursday, accusing the EU of "sheer blackmail."
"Any other intervention, any new demands by our lenders, will mean they are mocking the country," Public Order Minister and former EU commissioner Christos Papoutsis said, echoing an angry outburst by Greece's octogenarian president over German suggestions the country could go bankrupt.
"Some in Europe forget that behind the numbers are people," Papoutsis said. Union leaders called for a new protest rally on Sunday "to answer all those who want Greece under German occupation."
Analysts say the currency bloc will be in better shape to contain any contagion from a chaotic Greek default in the second half of the year when a more robust rescue fund is due to have been established.
"INSULTING"
Earlier in the day, policymakers were still talking about delaying the bailout, or holding some back, after EU sources told Reuters euro zone officials were studying the option of in order to retain some leverage over Athens, while still avoiding a disorderly default.
"Confidence has indeed sunk to a low point," Dutch Finance Minister Jan Kees De Jager told Dutch paper Het Financieele Dagblad. "Therefore it has been suggested to wait until after the elections because then you can make the commitment with the new government."
A Finnish official, who declined to be named, said: "Only part would be provided (initially) so we can avoid default. Later, post-election, maybe we (would) deliver fuller payment."
But Berlin appeared to have put paid to that idea and an EU source said the proposal had only been mooted as a suggestion and had not won wide support during a conference call of euro zone finance ministers on Wednesday.
A German coalition source, speaking after talks with the German finance ministry, said proposals to provide Greece with bridge financing to cover its immediate debt obligations while withholding the rest of the aid package until after elections expected in April were no longer being considered.
Frustration exploded on Wednesday as Greek President Karolos Papoulias, an 82-year-old veteran of the resistance to Nazi occupation of Greece during World War Two, lashed out at German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble.
Schaeuble, who has likened Greece to a "a bottomless pit," expressed doubt on Wednesday whether Athens would stick to new promises adopted by parliament on Monday as rioters torched and looted buildings across the capital.
"I cannot accept Mr Schaeuble insulting my country," Papoulias riposted. "Who is Mr Schaeuble to insult Greece? Who are the Dutch? Who are the Finnish?"
"Schaeuble Junta," ran a headline in the conservative Eleftheros Typos newspaper, harking back to Greece's painful spell under military rule during the 1960s and 1970s.
After the three-hour conference call among the 17 euro zone ministers, Eurogroup chairman Jean-Claude Juncker said progress had been made but made clear some matters remained open on making sure the bailout plan is carried out in full.
"Further considerations are necessary regarding the specific mechanisms to strengthen the surveillance of program implementation and to ensure that priority is given to debt servicing," he said.
Juncker predicted things would fall into place by Monday although any number have deadlines have been set, only to be missed.
Greek conservative leader Antonis Samaras - tipped to become prime minister after a possible vote in April - gave a written pledge on Wednesday to stick to the austerity package, meeting another EU demand, but added that "policy modifications" might be required to boost growth.
A new survey by the VPRC polling company showed Samaras' New Democracy party getting 27.5 percent support, down from its 30.5 percent score in January, but still well ahead of the newly-founded Democratic Left party in second with 16 percent.
Private and public sector unions representing about 2 million workers, or half the country's workforce, called for a new rally against the austerity measures for Sunday.
"We have only one demand now - elections," Nikos Kioutsoukis, general secretary of the country's largest private sector union GSEE, told Reuters.

TOKYO (Reuters) ? Japanese police and prosecutors have arrested seven men, including the former president of Olympus Corp and ex-bankers over a $1.7 billion accounting fraud -- one of the country's biggest corporate scandals.
Tokyo prosecutors arrested ex-president Tsuyoshi Kikukawa, former executive vice president Hisashi Mori and former auditor Hideo Yamada on suspicion of violating the Financial Instruments and Exchange Law, officials said Thursday.
Also apprehended were former bankers Akio Nakagawa and Nobumasa Yokoo and two others suspected of helping hide huge investment losses through complex takeover deals at the endoscope and camera maker.
The three former executives had been identified by an investigative panel, commissioned by Olympus, as the main suspects in the fraud, seeking to delay the reckoning from risky investments made in the late-1980s bubble economy.
The scandal was exposed in October by chief executive Michael Woodford, who was sacked by the Olympus board after querying dubious deals later found to have been used to conceal the losses. Woodford campaigned to win his job back, but gave up that bid last month, blaming cozy ties between management and big Japanese shareholders and citing the strain on his family.
"After going to hell and back, this is a day to remember," Woodford said in an email Thursday.
But he told a hastily-called London news conference that many questions remained unanswered. "These were huge amounts of money and we need to understand to what extent the banks were involved," he noted. "We've come a long way, but I don't think we are at a point at which we have closure."
The Briton, who was a rarity as a foreign CEO in Japan, plans to write a book about how he uncovered the scandal.
The arrests come as investors focus on who will run the once-proud company when its management steps down at an April 20 shareholders meeting, and whether Olympus will seek a capital tie-up to fix its balance sheet.
TAKING THE HELM
Olympus is banking on that April meeting marking a turning point in the scandal, with at least six of its 11-member board, including current president Shuichi Takayama, set to resign.
His successor is likely to be one of three board members the panel said were not responsible for the cover-up -- Masataka Suzuki, Kazuhiro Watanabe and Shinichi Nishigaki -- said a source familiar with the matter, who did not want to be identified due to the sensitivity of the issue.
"The arrests of former executives won't impact possible tie-ups with Terumo, Sony, Fujifilm and others," said a sell-side equity manager at a Japanese firm, who did not want to be named as he is not authorized to talk to the media.
"Olympus continues to be very attractive to other companies because of its endoscope business."
Last year the investigative panel alleged that Kikukawa, Mori and Yamada had played leading roles in a 13-year scheme to hide the losses, and they are among 19 executives Olympus is suing over the scandal.
The panel said it found no evidence of involvement by organized crime, despite speculation that "yakuza" gangsters were somehow involved in the cover-up scheme.
An Olympus spokesman said the company would cooperate fully with the investigative authorities. It is also under investigation by law enforcement agencies in Japan, Britain and the United States.
Kikukawa's condominium house was among 20 sites raided in December by prosecutors.
Nakagawa, who began his banking career at Nomura Securities, was a founding member of the Axes group, which was awarded a huge $687 million advisory fee for Olympus's acquisition in 2008 of UK medical equipment firm Gyrus that was at the heart of the scandal.
Yokoo, another ex-Nomura banker, ran a consulting firm, Global Company, which was hired by Olympus in 2000 to scout for new businesses and steered investment into three small money-losing Japanese firms.
Olympus in December filed five years' worth of corrected financial statements plus overdue first-half results, revealing a $1.1 billion dent in its balance sheet, triggering talk it would need to merge or forge a business tie-up to raise capital.
Monday it forecast a $410 million full-year loss due largely to its ailing camera operations, but its core endoscope business appeared unscathed by the scandal, and its president said the firm might not need outside capital.
Olympus's shares closed down 2.4 percent at 1,273 yen on Thursday, while the overall Tokyo market index slipped 0.3 percent. Shares in Olympus, currently worth around $4.5 billion, have halved in value since the scandal unfolded.

WASHINGTON ? The campaign finance system is so broken that legislative changes, including a constitutional amendment, are needed to rein in runaway, secret spending in elections, congressional Democrats said Thursday.
Democratic Sens. Michael Bennet of Colorado and Tom Udall of New Mexico said they want to put Congress in charge of setting campaign contribution limits and regulating "super" political action committees. These committees can spend unlimited money supporting candidates as long as they don't coordinate with the candidates, yet are required to reveal little about who they are.
The two senators proposed the amendment late last year. But the issue is receiving renewed attention in light of GOP-leaning super PACs that are spending millions of dollars on ads this election season.
Bennet said most people can't evaluate ads or know if their backers have an axe to grind. He said a 2010 Supreme Court ruling known as Citizens United that removed limits on corporate and union spending in elections has made matters worse.
In the House, top Democrats introduced long-shot legislation that would require outside groups running campaign ads to quickly identify themselves and their top contributors. It also would beef up reporting requirements for corporations and lobbyists.
"The American people have a right to know who is bank-rolling these television ads," said Rep. Chris Van Hollen, D-Md., a chief sponsor.
A similar effort to increase disclosure about campaign spending died in the Senate in 2010. This year's version is given little chance of clearing Congress.
The efforts come at the start of an election year that has already seen spending by super PACs swamp expenditures by Republican presidential candidates' own campaigns.
Through last week's Florida GOP primary, super PACs had spent at least $21 million on television ads. Expenditures by super PACs supporting Mitt Romney, Newt Gingrich and Rick Santorum exceeded spending by the campaigns themselves.

TOKYO ? Battered by the strong yen and supply disruptions from Thailand's floods, Honda said Tuesday that its net earnings in the October-December quarter tumbled 41 percent to 47.6 billion yen ($625 million) and projected a sharply lower full-year profit.
It's been a tough year for the Japanese automobile and motorcycle maker. Honda had just begun to recover from the March earthquake and tsunami, which damaged some of its suppliers, when Thailand's worst floods in 50 years swamped its vehicle assembly plant in Ayutthaya, north of Bangkok.
That disaster dealt such a blow to Honda that it scrapped its earnings forecast when it last reported earnings results in October.
Now Honda predicts its net profit for the fiscal year through March would drop nearly 60 percent to 215 billion yen.
Honda Motor Co., which makes the Accord sedan and Odyssey minivan, stopped making cars at its Thai plant in October, and said in a statement Tuesday that it was making progress draining the factory and cleaning up equipment, and expected production to resume there at the end of March.
The flooding also disrupted the output at many Honda suppliers in Thailand, forcing it to reduce production as far away as the U.S. and Canada. Honda said production in neighboring Asian countries interrupted by the problems in Thailand was expected to return to normal by April.
All told, the problems related to flooding in Thailand have cost the company 260,000 vehicles in lost production worldwide, according to Tomohiro Okada, a company spokesman.
The company said it is working with the local industrial park to build water protection walls around the plant and will make requests of the Thai government to take steps to prevent the risk of flooding in the future. The Thai plant makes the Jazz, Civic, Accord, CR-V sports utility vehicle and other vehicles.
The Thai flooding affected many other Japanese companies, reflecting the increasingly interconnected nature of today's global economy. Toshiba Corp. on Tuesday cited the disaster as one reason behind the 10.6 billion yen net loss it reported for the most recent quarter.
A bright spot for Honda was its motorcycle business, which is booming in emerging markets. Motorcycle sales rose 6.3 percent during the quarter from the same quarter a year ago to nearly 3.1 million units.
Quarterly sales slid 8 percent during the fiscal third quarter to 1.942 trillion yen. The company projects full-year sales will decline 12.2 percent to 7.85 trillion yen.
The strong yen, which erodes exporters' foreign earned income when repatriated, also ate into the company's income.
Global vehicle sales in the quarter declined 2.9 percent from a year ago to 830,000 units, the company said. Vehicle sales in Japan rose 16 percent and North America increased 2 percent from the same quarter a year ago, while unit sales in Europe, Asia and other regions fell.

Washington, DC -- Norovirus, a pathogen that often causes food poisoning and gastroenteritis, was responsible for 18.2 percent of all infection outbreaks and 65 percent of ward closures in U.S. hospitals during a two-year period, according to a new study published in the February issue of the American Journal of Infection Control (AJIC), the official publication of APIC - the Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology.
A team of researchers from Chartis, Main Line Health System, Lexington Insurance Company, and APIC Consulting Services collected survey responses from 822 APIC members who work in U.S. hospitals regarding outbreak investigations at their institutions during 2008 and 2009. The study was conducted to determine how often outbreak investigations are initiated in U.S. hospitals, as well as the triggers for investigations, types of organisms, and control measures including unit closures.
Thirty-five percent of the 822 hospitals responding had investigated at least one outbreak in the previous two years. Four organisms caused nearly 60 percent of the outbreaks: norovirus (18.2 percent), Staphylococcus aureus (17.5 percent), Acinetobacter spp (13.7 percent), and Clostridium difficile (10.3 percent). These results reflect 386 outbreak investigations reported by 289 hospitals over a 24-month period.
Medical/surgical units were the most common location of outbreak investigations (25.7 percent), followed by surgical units (13.9 percent). Nearly one-third (29.2 percent) of outbreaks were reported in a category that included emergency departments, rehabilitation units, long-term acute care hospitals, psychiatric/behavioral health units, and skilled nursing facilities. According to the results, the average number of confirmed cases per outbreak was 10.1 and the average duration was 58.4 days. Unit closures were reported in 22.6 percent of the cases, causing an average 16.7 bed closures for 8.3 days.
Of reported outbreaks, only 132 (52.2 percent) of investigations were reported to an external agency, with just 71 (28.4 percent) involving assistance in the investigation by an external resource. In most states, reporting to the state health department is required and can provide hospitals with expertise to expedite and expand their outbreak investigations.
"It is clear that outbreaks of healthcare-associated infections occur with some frequency in hospitals as well as nonacute settings," state the authors. "An infection prevention and control program and its staff should be prepared for all aspects of an outbreak investigation through written policies and procedures as well as communication with internal and external partners."
