Game recap: Boise St. 32, New Mexico 29

The No. 24 Boise St. Broncos narrowly averted a upset by their unheralded host, the New Mexico Lobos, but came up with plays on offense and defense when they needed them in the fourth quarter to escape Albuquerque with a 32-29 victory Saturday night.

The No. 24 Boise St. Broncos narrowly averted a upset by their unheralded host, the New Mexico Lobos, but came up with plays on offense and defense when they needed them in the fourth quarter to escape Albuquerque with a 32-29 victory Saturday night.Turnovers played a big part in the Mountain West Conference for both teams.

The Broncos used three UNM turnovers to build a 25-0 halftime lead. The Lobos countered in the second half, using a pair of BSU fumbles to vault them to 29 second half points and the near upset before 28,270 at Branch Field at University Stadium.

"It was two different games, two halves of football and two different games," said New Mexico coach Bob Davie. "The biggest reason was because of turnovers. In the first half we turned the ball over three times. We were able to move the ball, but we had no points at halftime. Defensively, we've got to keep plugging away... keep plugging away. If we don't force some turnovers, we have a hard, hard time."

Looking nothing like the team that was beaten 45-0 by Boise St. in both teams' regular season closer in 2011, New Mexico (2-3, 0-1 MWC) close to 32-29 on a touchdown run by freshman quarterback Cole Gautsche with 7:42 left in the game. The score was made possible by a 53-yard fumble return by linebacker Joe Stoner after UNM's A.J. Butler stripped the ball from Boise ball carrier Shane Williams-Rhodes on an end around the play before. On the ensuing drive, the Lobo defense allowed the Broncos into UNM territory but stiffened at the UNM 27-yard line.

Boise St. kicker Michael Frisina missed a 44-yard field goal attempt to give the Lobos two minutes of clock and at chance to at least tie the game. But the Lobos went three-and-out, with senior quarterback B.R. Holbrook pass on 4th-and-4 at the UNM 33 yard-line - the only UNM pass attempt in the entire second half -- was broken up by BSU's Tommy Smith. The Broncos were then able to run out the clock to seal the victory.Boise St. (3-1, 1-0) finished with 514 yards of total offense. Quarterback Joe Southwick sparked the Bronco offense with 311 yards on 24-of-34 passing with three touchdown sand no interceptions while Jay Ajayi racked up 118 yards rushing on six carries with one touchdown. D.J. Harper added 98 yards on 19 rushes.

Gautsche scored two touchdowns and rushed for 73 yards on 11 carries for UNM. Kasey Carrier added 93 yards on 18 carries with one touchdown. Jhurell Pressley scored a touchdown and added 58 yards as New Mexico netted 330 of its 374 offensive yards using the run.In the first half, the Broncos defense did its job forcing three first half fumbles while the offense pulled off a pair of big plays in the half to give the Broncos and advantage they never relinquished. Southwick connected on a 50-yard pass play to Dallas Burroughs down the center of the UNM defense to finish the first quarter.

Boise scored two plays later when on a 10-yard TD strike from Southwick to Chris Potter to give BSU a 10-0 advantage.Jay Ajayi broke open the game in the with 3:52 left in the half when he broke free for a 71-yard run up the middle. Ajayi scored two plays later on a 1-yard run to make the score 25-0.

New Mexico (2-3, 0-1) twice moved into Broncos territory in the first half only to fumble away the ball to extinguish the drives. On the opening drive freshman Cole Gaustche fumbled on the Boise 39-yard line to set up the Broncos' first score. Then on their best drive of the half, UNM's Lamaar Thomas fumbled the ball away on the Boise 14-yard line.

Ajayi then ran the ball 71-yards the other way on the very next play."(At halftime I told them) ?Narrow the focus - don't think about all of the ramifications," said Davie. "'Don't think about what the final score might be. Don't think about how hardwe worked and we might not get anything out of it. Just go play the second half.'"New Mexico's second half comeback was sparked when UNM's Jeric Magnant forced Boise's Burroughs to fumble the kickoff to start the second half. The Lobos took just 6 plays to drive 26 yards and score their first touchown to make the score 25-7 in favor of Boise. On the ensuing drive, BSU drove all the way to the UNM 4-yard line but the Lobos forced Southwick to throw an incompletion on 4th-and-1 to force a turnover on downs.

The Lobos took the ball 96 yards on seven plays - including a 40-yard run by Gautsche -to score and cut the lead to 25-14 with 3:22 left in the third quarter.Boise St. drove for a touchdown on the next drive to make the score 32-14, but UNM would no go away. The Lobos put together another touchdown drive, punctuated by a 7-yard run by Gautsche to pull New Mexico to within 32-21 with 5:17 left. The Lobos forced a fumble on the next play to set up the final sequence.

"I really appreciate our team in the second half - I really appreciate the fight," saidDavie. "You're down 25-0 at halftime; they really pulled off a little bit right there at the end of the first half. Chris Peterson kind of sat on it a little bit. But the second half shows you what this (team) can be."

Hilary Rosen: How President Obama Can Win the First Debate

Have you noticed lately that everyone else is getting credit for the president being in the lead except President Obama? ?It was the cohesive Democratic message at the convention -- it was Bill Clinton bringing it home -- it was Mitt Romney being tone deaf about 47 percent of the American people. ?In short, according to the pundits, it has been everything but the president himself that's responsible for the momentum that his re-election has now. ?In fact, it's been the fundamental strategy of the president and his campaign that has allowed these other issues to resonate so loudly with the American people. ?

When the president successfully shifted this election as a choice between two leaders and two directions, rather than a referendum on him and the current state of the economy, everything else fell into a complementary narrative. ?Yes, there was a good story to tell about the accomplishments of the last four years, but America needed to see the bigger picture. So now when his tax rate hovers at 13 percent or when he picks the medicare-killer or when he can't decide if his Massachusetts healthcare plan is an example of his compassion or a noose around the country when it is re-labeled Obamacare, Mitt Romney falls into the trap of comparison every time. ?He may not have wanted those things to define his candidacy, but President Obama is successfully making America realize that if we reject him, we would be choosing Mitt Romney.

So that is my first piece of advice for President Obama in the first debate. ?Frame virtually every answer as a choice, not a defense. ?Romney is smart and a skilled debater and he will try to stay vague and put the president on the defensive early. ?The president must resist the temptation to lash back only with a spirited defense. ?Every issue presents a choice for the American people. ?And on an issue by issue basis, the people are mostly with the POTUS.

My second piece of advice is for the president to share his best self as emblematic of what is best in America. ?Mitt Romney says that he only wants everyone to focus on the economic performance of the country. ?But life isn't that simple or bi-nary. ?If moms are worried about their reproductive healthcare or whether their rights are respected, it is hard to concentrate only on the economy. ?If immigrants are worried about being discriminated against or their families deported, it adds to the stress of their economic life. ?If gays and lesbians can't have their families recognized, it makes their search for meaningful work more complicated as they cobble benefits together. ?If college students are worrying about the stress of their student loans rather than studying as hard as they can, their chances of pulling themselves up are more limited. ?In short, America succeeds when all of its people are valued and we are all pulling in the same direction rather than re-fighting old fights or letting social issues divide us. ?That is not the world that Mitt Romney inhabits, but it is the reality for most Americans. Don't be afraid to talk about America as a land of opportunity in the broadest context.

Mitt Romney has everything at stake in this first debate. ?His campaign team and surrogates can't stop talking about it. The pressure will be great on him to perform. ?Therefore he is certain to say things that really, really annoy the president. ?So my final piece of advice is most simple: stay nice. ?No "you're likable enough" comments; no jokes about dogs on top of the car; no snarking about how rich Romney is; no patronizing lecturing when he has his facts wrong; just stay nice. ?One of the greatest gifts America has is a president who is kind and warm with a big smile and compassionate heart. ?That is the president who will win the first debate.

Matrix One drops to $60

Well, the Matrix One isn't becoming any more attractive spec-wise as the days pass, but Direct Merchandise Marketing believes they can keep up with the low-priced big boys by under-cutting them even further. If a $90 retail sticker wasn't enough to convince you that the A8-powered ICS slab deserved your attention, maybe a drop to $60 will change your tune. The 7-inch WVGA tablet is now an impressively thrifty $59.99, though, after tax and shipping the total tops $70. Still, its impossible to deny its bargain value.

Health Freedom Alliance ? Benefits of Drinking Coffee

For years, physicians have been warning about the negative health effects of drinking coffee. You may have been told that coffee will raise your blood pressure, lead to heart disease, give you an ulcer or make you diabetic. But studies continue to roll in that caste doubt on this ?common wisdom.?

This is a Flash-based video and may not be viewable on mobile devices.

Certainly, like anything, coffee should not be used in excess. However, study after study has failed to prove that moderate coffee consumption increases your risk for cardiovascular disease or any other serious illness.

In fact, it?s beginning to look like coffee?at least in moderation?may have a number of unrecognized health-promoting?properties. As a result of the rather impressive list of therapeutic benefits, I?ve changed my recommendations about coffee.

One of the latest studies, published in April 2012 in the?American Journal of Clinical Nutrition1, confirms earlier studies that coffee may actually?reduce?your risk for developing type 2 diabetes.

Regardless of traditionally ominous warnings that coffee should be avoided, it?s being consumed in massive quantities worldwide. Although it?s inarguable now that coffee does have therapeutic benefits, if you are dousing your cup of Joe in creamer, sugar, and other sweeteners and flavorings, you are missing out on the therapeutic benefits and potentially harming your health.

Please understand that I am not changing my position to justify a ?bad? habit. I personally have never enjoyed the taste of coffee and have had less than five cups my entire life and those were used?therapeutically?to compensate for jet lag.

?

Could Coffee Really be GOOD for You?

My understanding of coffee?s virtues was greatly enhanced by my interview with?Ori Hofmekler, author of?The Warrior Diet?and?Unlocking the Muscle Gene, who has researched coffee extensively. Ori explained how coffee, when consumed in the right way, can be used effectively as part of your overall health and fitness plan.

Although organic coffee as a whole food may be therapeutic, caffeine in isolation can be quite toxic. The natural blend of polyphenol?antioxidants?(including chlorogenic acids), bioflavonoids, vitamins and minerals in coffee beans all work together to help neutralize the harsher effects of the caffeine2. There are literally thousands of different natural chemical compounds in your brew, and science now suggests the synergy between them can pack a nice nutritional punch.

With all of these compounds, you might wonder if there are any that have undesirable health effects. Yes, there are. But as I mentioned earlier, these are more concerning if ingested?in isolation, as opposed to being consumed as part of the whole food.

What about the Caffeine?

Caffeine is the most widely used drug in the world and can be helpful or harmful, depending on how it?s used. Caffeine provides a ?lift? by blocking the normal action of adenosine. Adenosine normally slows down your brain?s activity and induces sleepiness. Some people are caffeine sensitive and don?t tolerate it well, or have problems sleeping if they have caffeine too late in the day.

Caffeine levels vary depending on type of bean, roast, grind, and brewing method. Contrary to popular belief, darker roasts typically contain less caffeine than lighter roasts due to the prolonged heat breaking down more of the caffeine molecules. Bean species also differ widely in their naturally occurring concentrations of caffeine. Additionally, drip coffee actually has?morecaffeine than espresso because the brew time is much longer. And in general, the finer the grind, the higher the caffeine in the coffee. So, you might want to vary some of these factors if you experience a reaction, like switching from drip coffee to espresso, or changing brands.

If you have an issue with decreased adrenal function, use coffee with care, as it can be hard on your adrenal glands. Coffee also has a diuretic effect, so if you have problems with electrolyte imbalance, you might want to avoid it.

If you have any negative reactions to coffee, caffeine isn?t?always?the culprit. You could be sensitive to some of the burnt sugars or oils produced during the roasting of the beans, rather than the caffeine. People experience symptoms such as stomach cramping, heart palpitations and other autonomic symptoms, and these symptoms are usually interpreted as caffeine sensitivity when they are actually more of a food intolerance. There is also the possibility of?mold?or other?contaminants?triggering an allergy (as coffee is a dried food), so you want to make sure your coffee is of the highest quality and meticulously produced.

But as a whole, if you?re healthy, coffee is pretty well tolerated and the positive effects seem to outweigh the negative ones for most people. Please note that I still recommend women completely avoid using caffeine while?pregnant.

The List is Growing of Health Benefits from Coffee

?

The following is a summary of some of the more recent research that supports coffee?s health benefits.

Type 2 Diabetes A Japanese study in 20103?revealed that coffee consumption exerted a protective effect against type 2 diabetes; further confirmed by 2012 German study, published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. Researchers have also found that coffee doubles glucose intake, which will greatly reduce blood glucose levels.
Parkinson?s Disease Coffee may significantly cut your risk of Parkinson?s disease4. In fact, coffee is so preventative against Parkinson?s that drug companies are designing experimental drugs that mimic coffee?s benefits to your brain5
Alzheimer?s Disease A 2011 study6?revealed that a yet unidentified mystery ingredient in coffee interacts with the caffeine to help protect you from Alzheimer?s disease
Prostate Cancer A large 2011 study7?of nearly 50,000 men found men who drank six cups of coffee per day had 60 percent lower risk of lethal prostate cancer, and those who drank three cups per day had a 30 percent lower risk
Liver Cancer A Japanese study8?found those who drank coffee daily, or close to it, had about half the risk of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), a type of liver cancer, than people who never drank coffee; coffee is also associated with less severe liver fibrosis, lower levels of fat in your liver, and lower rates of hepatitis-C disease progression9
Kidney Cancer Coffee consumption may be associated with decreased risk of kidney cancer10
Colorectal Cancer A 2007 study11?suggested coffee consumption may lower colon cancer risk among women
Heart Rhythm Problems A study showed moderate coffee drinking reduces your chances of being hospitalized for heart rhythm problems12
Pulmonary Function A 2010 study13?revealed a beneficial effect of coffee on the pulmonary function of nonsmokers
Stroke A 2011 study14?found that women who drank more than one cup of coffee per day had about a 25 percent lower risk of stroke than women who drank less; a 2009 study15?found women who drank four or more cups of coffee per day reduced their stroke risk by 20 percent
Gastrointestinal Flora A study16?in 2009 showed coffee produced an increase in the metabolic activity and/or numbers of Bifidobacterium, which are beneficial bacteria in your gut

There are many more studies with positive findings?in fact, too many to list. Not every single study shows coffee to be beneficial, but the majority are quite positive, suggesting that coffee has been unfairly maligned. There is strong evidence coffee can help stabilize your blood glucose level and may even help curb?sugar?cravings. Caffeine binds to your opioid receptors, which essentially prohibits you from craving something else, such as sugar.

Research also shows that coffee triggers a mechanism in your brain that releases a growth factor called Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor (BDNF). BDNF activates brain stem cells to convert into new neurons, and also expresses itself in your muscles. It does this by supporting the neuromotor, which is the most critical element in your muscle. Without the neuromotor, your muscle is like an engine without the ignition. Neuromotor degradation is part of the process underlying age-related muscle atrophy. Essentially, caffeine from natural whole coffee may help keep your brain and muscle tissue young.

When to Drink Coffee for Maximum Benefit

According to Ori Hofmekler?s extensive research, coffee increases your metabolism by up to 20 percent. I?ve previously discussed the benefits of exercising on an?empty stomach. But coffee can actually be quite beneficial if consumed?before exercise. Ori states:

?Coffee before training allows you fast energy to initiate your workout. For people who train in the morning, having coffee before training is a great advantage.?

However, coffee is a potent substance and should be used only in moderation?without sugar. Ori recommends having just one cup of organic coffee or one shot of espresso in the morning or before training, and that?s it for the day. If you exercise in the morning, have your coffee prior to your workout, NOT after. Consuming coffee after your workout interferes with your body?s muscle-building mechanism. Again, your body can handle whole, fresh organic coffee because it doesn?t hit your system the way synthetic caffeine does. But you don?t want to go overboard.

Dark Roast Coffee may be Superior to Light Roast

When it comes to the health benefits of organic whole-bean black coffee, the darker the roast, the better.17?It?s often the case that foods with the darkest pigments also offer the most robust benefits to health, and?dark roast coffee, such as French or Italian Roast, or roasts used to make espresso or Turkish coffee, are no exception.

Roasted coffees are higher in neuroprotective agents than green (unroasted) coffees. A new study in?Molecular Nutrition & Food Research18?found that dark roast coffee restored blood levels of the antioxidants vitamin E and?glutathione?more effectively than light roast coffee. The dark roast also led to a significant body weight reduction in pre-obese volunteers, whereas the lighter roast did not. Other studies have shown that dark roast coffee produces more of a chemical called N-methylpyridinium, which helps prevent your stomach from producing excess acid, so darker roast coffee may be easier on your stomach than lighter roast coffee.19

Coffee Quality is Key: Four Tips to Remember

When it comes to achieving any therapeutic benefits from coffee, only quality coffee will do. You can find a great deal of information at Coffee & Conservation20. Here are five primary considerations:

  • Choose?Organic:?Coffee beans are one of the most?heavily sprayed crops with pesticides. So, you should select only coffee beans that are certified organic. Remember, you will obliterate ANY positive effects if you consume coffee that?s been doused in pesticides or other chemicals. Whenever possible, purchase sustainable ?shade-grown? coffee to help prevent the continued destruction of our tropical rain forests and the birds that inhabit them. There are many who say shade grown coffee tastes better as well.
  • Whole Bean:?You?ll want to purchase whole bean coffee that smells and tastes fresh, not stale; if your coffee does not have a pleasant aroma, it is likely rancid. Grind it yourself to prevent rancidity as pre-ground coffee may be rancid by the time you get it home.
  • Drink it Black:?If you?re interested in the health benefits, drink your coffee black, without sugar or cream or flavorings. Add sugar and you?ll certainly ruin any of the benefits discussed above by spiking your insulin levels, which contributes to?insulin resistance. Make sure the?water?you?re using is pure.
  • Coffee Filters: If you use a ?drip? coffee maker, be sure to use non-bleached filters. The bright white ones are chlorine-bleached, and some of this chlorine will leach from the filter during the brewing process. Bleached filters are also notoriously full of dangerous disinfection byproducts, such as dioxin.
  • Coffee Mugs: Please be careful about the container you use. Avoid plastic cups as the?BPA?will leach into your drink, and also avoid Styrofoam cups that can leach polystyrene molecules. Your best bets include glass and ceramic travel mugs.

Take a Crack at Roasting Your Own

If you want ultimate control over the quality of your coffee, as well as great cost savings, you may want to check into roasting your own beans. Many places are now offering dried organic green coffee beans for sale at less than half the cost of roasted. This can amount to a huge savings over grocery store prices?and is certainly more cost effective than daily visits to your local coffee house, even after the cost of a small home roasting machine is factored in. Your coffee will be fresher and the nutritional benefits more dependable. And it?s fun!

Roastmasters21?is a popular online resource for information about home coffee roasting and supplies. If you follow the guidelines above, I see no reason why coffee cannot be a sensible and even therapeutic part of your diet.

  • i.am.STEAM, a collaboration between artist and youth advocate will.i.am's i.am.angel Foundation and Discovery Education to engage U.S. students in STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art and math) education as part of Discovery's commitment as a member of CGI.
  • STEM POWER!, a new Discovery Education program dedicated to empowering girls in the U.S. with tools for succeeding in STEM-related fields, and 'Discovery Girls,' a new DCGEP program in Africa dedicated to improving the education outcomes of marginalized girls, in support of the Equal Futures Partnership led by Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.

Additionally, Hendricks joined UN Secretary Ban Ki-Moon, former UK Prime Minister Gordon Brown and other leaders at UN General Assembly events on September 26 and 27 to address business' role in acting on global education priorities, and, on September 24, Goodwyn represented Discovery on a plenary panel at the CGI Annual Meeting to discuss Discovery's overall commitment to improving global education through its Discovery Education division, the i.am.STEAM initiative with will.i.am and the i.m.angel foundation, and DCGEP.

"Empowering and supporting education has been part of Discovery's DNA since the day we launched Discovery Channel on June 17, 1985, and the first call we received was from a teacher asking to use our content to ignite and inspire the curiosity of students in the classroom," said Hendricks. "Discovery is proud to be partnering with the United Nations, the Clinton Global Initiative, and other members of the Global Business Coalition for Education to make a difference in the lives of young people around the world, both through Discovery Education and the Discovery Channel Global Education Partnership."

"When John Hendricks founded Discovery Communications he recognized the power and responsibility that private industry has in helping to drive education priorities around the world," said Goodwyn. "Today we're excited to continue building upon that legacy through Discovery Education's partnership with the i.am.angel Foundation on a groundbreaking youth engagement initiative, i.am.STEAM."

As part of today's announcement, Discovery is committing an additional $7.4 million to the work of DCGEP, of which John Hendricks is chairman, to continue its successful innovations that have enabled the development of an award-winning library of educational programs specifically for communities in the developing world served by the project. The library, together with equipment and tailored teacher training, is provided to all DCGEP Learning Centers, which to date have engaged and impacted more than one million students. This effort is part of Discovery's commitment in support of the UN's 'Education First' initiative and its role as a founding member of the Global Business Coalition for Education, which brings together corporate leaders committed to delivering on the promise of quality education for all of the world's children.

i.am.STEAM is a five-year youth engagement initiative, implemented by Discovery Education on behalf of will.i.am's i.am.angel Foundation, designed to bring STEAM education to life for millions both inside and outside the classroom. Launching this fall, i.am.STEAM will provide a portfolio of immersive learning experiences for under-resourced elementary and middle school students, including after-school enrichment programs, immersive summer camps and educator tools and resources. i.am.STEAM is part of Discovery's commitment in support of CGI, on behalf of the i.am.angel Foundation.

Developed by Discovery Education, STEM POWER! is a program dedicated to tapping into girls' passions, interests, and capabilities, and empowering them with the tools that will enable them to succeed in STEM-related fields. The key components of the STEM POWER! initiative will target girls in U.S. middle schools and high schools, and include the development of STEM-related curricula that prepares girls for later success in college coursework, exposure to female role models to create a belief system that women can succeed in STEM, and exposure to exciting STEM-related careers in everything from game design to fashion design to connect girls' passions to STEM fields. As part of Discovery's commitment as a founding member of the Equal Futures Partnership, STEM POWER! is an opportunity for like-minded partners to join forces on a program dedicated to realizing women's human rights by expanding opportunity for women and girls to fully participate in public life and drive inclusive economic growth in our countries.

Also in support of the Equal Futures Partnership, Discovery Communications is committed to closing the girls' education gap in some of the world's most under-resourced communities through an innovative program in Africa designed to build on the success of DCGEP. By creating educational video content with, for and about girls, and through innovative teacher training and community outreach, the 'Discovery Girls' project will seek to increase enrollment and retention, and improve the education outcomes of marginalized girls.

RadioShack CEO Gooch steps down

(AP) ? RadioShack CEO James Gooch has agreed to step down immediately and is leaving its board of directors, the struggling consumer electronics company said Wednesday.

Chief Financial Officer Dorvin Lively will serve as its interim CEO while it looks for a permanent replacement, the company said.

RadioShack Corp. said that it is in the process of hiring an executive search firm to help find a new CEO and that it may consider both internal and external candidates. Gooch became its CEO in May 2011 as part of the company's succession plan. Gooch, who joined RadioShack in 2006 as its CFO, took over as CEO when Julian Day retired.

In July, RadioShack posted an unexpected second-quarter loss and suspended its dividend. The chain's troubles are partly due to wider problems in the brick-and-mortar electronics industry and add fuel to the notion that selling consumer electronics in brick-and-mortar stores is becoming less and less viable.

RadioShack and Best Buy Co. are dealing with shoppers who are increasingly moving away from devices like computers and cameras to buy tablets and smartphones, which are less profitable for retailers.

RadioShack's stock has been hit hard. Since the beginning of the year, its shares are down 74 percent. The stock dropped to an all-time low of $2.36 in July. It closed at $2.56 on Tuesday, but gained 8 cents to $2.64 in premarket trading Wednesday.

The company said in announcing Gooch's departure that its board and Gooch "have agreed" that he would step down as both CEO and the board.

"We thank Jim for his service to the company and wish him well in his future endeavors," Chairman Daniel Feehan said in the statement.

Gooch was quoted in the same news release as thanking his fellow board members and "everyone at the company for their strong support" and wished them "great success in the future."

RadioShack, which is based in Fort Worth, Texas, has about 4,700 company-run stores in the U.S. and Mexico. It has approximately 1,500 U.S. wireless phone centers and about 1,100 dealer and other outlets worldwide.

In a Securities and Exchange Commission filing Tuesday, the Palo Alto, Calif., automaker said it has had trouble producing the number of vehicles it anticipated since launching production of the car in June.

Tesla?said it will generate $44 million to $46 million in third-quarter sales, compared with the roughly $80 million analysts had projected based upon the company?s production goals.

?The Model S is an all-new vehicle which we are producing with new employees using new equipment. As our main focus is on quality, we have methodically increased our Model S production at a rate slower than we had earlier anticipated,??Tesla?said in the filing.

?Our suppliers also must produce new products in sufficient quantities and quality levels to meet our increasing demand. Certain suppliers have experienced delays in meeting our demand and we continue to focus on supplier capabilities and constraints,? the automaker said.

The Model S is a luxury hatchback that offers seating for five adults and sells for about $50,000 to more than $100,000 depending on trim level and options. It is fast, boasting a zero-to-60 miles per hour acceleration of less than six seconds. The car has received rave reviews from the automotive press.

Tesla?builds the Model S at a factory in Fremont, Calif., where it plans to also make the Model X, an electric SUV built on the same platform and sharing much of the technology, starting late next year.

As of this week,?Tesla?has built 255 Model S cars, and has reached a weekly production rate of 77 vehicles. The company wants to produce cars at a rate of 400 a week.?Tesla?anticipates building 20,000 cars in 2013.

Tesla?also cut its annual revenue projection because of the delays. It said it will now bring in between $400 million and $440 million this year, down from previous estimates of $560 million to $600 million.

The automaker also announced plans to raise more money via a stock offering of 4.3 million shares and has granted the underwriter, Goldman Sachs, a 30-day option to buy almost 700,000 additional shares.

Tesla?has fully drawn down a $465 million Department of Energy loan that is part of a program that makes funds available to makers of alternative-fuel vehicles. After the offering, the automaker will have about $228 million in cash.

Tesla?also said it is about to open the first locations in its ?Tesla?Supercharger network,? a group of company-operated solar-powered electric charging stations that will allow?Tesla?drivers to charge their vehicles as they drive across California. The first six stations will be located in Folsom, Gilroy, Coalinga, Lebec, Barstow and Hawthorne. It will take about 30 minutes to give the vehicles a charge that lasts about 150 miles.
