The Shady World of Repair Manuals and Planned Obsolescence

Keeping manuals off the internet ensures the only path for beleaguered customers is sending broken devices back to high-priced, only-manufacturer-authorized service centers. By making it so expensive and inconvenient to repair broken electronics, this policy amounts to planned obsolescence: many ...

TV recommendations from your business advisor ? The Appletree ...

There are two TV programs that I watch regularly that?are on my recommended list? for any small business owner.

SHARK TANK

ABC?s Shark Tank ?has been a TV phenomenon spanning three seasons, with eight different angel investors from a variety of industries. These angel investors, also called ?sharks?, battle it out for a chance to invest in promising new companies. The show illustrates the American dream, which is something people still believe in despite the bad economy. By watching the show, you?re entertained, inspired and you end up learning a lot about what it takes to sell your idea and make it a reality.

So, what?s the vale of this? Imagine that you?re looking for cash from your relatives, or even a bank. Whether you?re already established and making money is going to make a huge difference. If not, a really good track record, or simply great command that you understand your business is going to make all the difference in your securing funding.

If you need money in? your business, what are you going to do with it? How are you going to live? How much have you invested? What makes your business idea so unique?

This is all very educational, and usually quite entertaining, as you hear entrepeneurs pitch their ideas.

RESTAURANT IMPOSSIBLE

In each episode, Chef Robert Irvine is given the ?mission? of making the impossible possible by renovating a failing restaurant in two days on a $10,000 budget. Irvine is assisted by HGTV designers and a?general contractor,Tom Bury. After assessing the problems with the restaurant, Robert Irvine typically creates a plan for the new decor, oversees the cleaning of the restaurant, reduces the size of the menu and improves the food, develops a promotional activity, educates the restaurant?s owners, or trains the staff as needed by each restaurant.

What?s intriguing about this show is that one of the first questions asked of the owners is what their gross profit margins are. Do they know what their labor costs and what their food costs are? When they develop a new product, do they figure out what their ?cost? is before simply setting a menu price?

Although this has become very much a formula show,?I would recommend any business owner to watch it a few times. It?s one of the best ways to learn from someone else?s mistakes!

10 Tips To Help Improve Productivity By ... - Business Insider

Almost everyone has heard the phrase Time is Money! This was one of the first few phrases that I heard in my childhood. Like every other child, I didn?t pay much attention to it back then, but now I think it holds true for any person, student, worker or business entity.

Today?s big world of business is dynamic and things are changing with high velocity. In order to keep abreast with the changing trends, businesses should act in a timely manner, i.e. doing things at the right time and the right place! I personally concur with the fact that nowadays every organization wants their employees to be effective and efficient because with changing economies, where lay-offs and downsizing are on the rise, every business setup wants their employees to be productive. Being efficient calls for doing work or producing results in a short time or with fewer resources. So, if every employee gets efficient and accomplishes tasks in a timely manner, it ?would become an ideal working setup. But nothing in this world is perfect; employees, myself included(at times), waste time at the workplace.

Adam Gurian, ?President of ?Timex, has shared his top 10 tips that can be used to save precious time at work. I have personally tried and to my surprise, they do work! ?Here they are:

  1. Minor tasks that arise every day at work should be tackled immediately. This practice can save you time in the long run.
  2. Before you leave the office, do the prep work for tomorrow?s tasks.
  3. Short ?mental breaks? during work can rejuvenate you and help you be more productivity.
  4. Organizing your tasks can help you keep a track of what to do and when to do it.
  5. Whenever you receive a call during work time, stand up and receive the call. This will shorten the time spent on the call and help you come to the point of the conversation quickly.
  6. Always stick to a schedule.
  7. If you know you can?t accomplish a task that is being assigned to you, then muster up the courage to say no to that task. There is no shame if you?re unable to do ?everything?.
  8. Avoid opening every other email (unless you know it is important!). Most of the time people waste time reading emails that are actually ?not? important.
  9. Limit social media sites in the workplace.?Social media is undoubtedly a big problem and time waster for employees. The high amount of usage of sites like Facebook, Twitter and Pinterest at work have become huge contributors to wasting time and decrease in efficiency.
  10. The use of technology to make the most of your time is a good idea. I for one am a big user of Skype and I make sure I can do most of my meetings via Skype to save time and, of course, travel expenses.

Timex?s ideas of saving time are indeed thoughtful. Creating schedules, ?a to-do-list for everyday, organizing the important tasks and giving priority to those tasks are useful tips for any person who wants to be productive and efficient at work. I would say one of the imperative tricks of the trade, though, is to think smarter and act smarter from today, because if you?re not concentrating on doing your job as efficiently as possible, there is most likely someone else who can!

Talk Nerdy to Me - Episode 1 | Alaska Commons

Written by: James Shewmake on November 8, 2012

?

Welcome to the first edition of Talk Nerdy to Me, Alaska Commons? new home for all things nerd culture related. Here you will find insights into webcomics, books, movies, nerd gear, news and more!

Comics

In starting things off, I have a confession to make. I am addicted to webcomics, and have been for quite some time. At last count I was following over 60 comics in my RSS feed, about 40 of which update semi-regularly or regularly.

I first broke my webcomic cherry about 10 years ago, with a comic that is still one of my favorites; Something Positive ?by Randy Milholland. I love Something Positive because it?s honest, irreverent, occasionally NSFW, and it always makes me chuckle.

The characters of S*P are a motley and down to earth crew. The lead character is Davan, a self deprecating guy with an incredibly cynical world view and sarcastic sense of humor. For those who can see past the thick layers he is a steadfast friend. He currently lives in Texas with his hairless amorphous (seemingly indestructible) cat Choo Choo Bear, his long time best friend PeeJee and his snarky aging father who is in the early stages of Alzheimer?s. There?s quite an extensive supporting cast, with story lines bouncing back and forth between Boston, Texas, Los Angeles, and various other locales.

Randy does an excellent job of blending everyday life with extraordinary adventures while including the occasional clever crossover.

But I will warn you, this comic is not for the easily offended, and Randy doesn?t really care about hate mail. So if you like snark, sarcasm, cynicism all rolled in with some witty social commentary, I highly recommend picking up right from the beginning.

And watch out for the Redneck Trees

Gear

And now we move on to nerd gear.

If you have ever seen me in person, chances are I was wearing a shirt with some (often obscure) nerd culture reference on it.

My absolute favorite shirt (one I?m wearing as I write this) comes from the talented crew over at shark robot. If you live in Alaska it?s a must own, because as everyone now knows, we can see Russia from our house and vice versa.

?

Books

Halloween has come and gone, but if you?re into creepy tales of science horror and macabre, I highly recommend you pick up a copy of H.P. Lovecraft: Complete and Unabridged.

If you?ve never heard of Lovecraft, the best explanation I can give is ?Edgar Allen Poe on Acid?. Seriously, pick this book up and enter the world of the Old Ones and Elder gods. You won?t regret it!

News and stuff

Oh, and in nerd news, there was something or other I saw in passing about a merger between the greatest science fantasy film of my childhood and some children?s network. In typical internet fashion, every possible joke ever was immediately made:

And that?s this week in Talk Nerdy to Me, a feature that I hope to bring to Alaska Commonsland on an every other week basis!

Have a book you want me to review or gear or other suggestions? Tweet me @NorthernWander or drop us a line at info@alaskacommons.com.

Next week I return with a new edition of SCIENCE! but until then keep talking nerdy?

James Shewmake is a Dark Lord of the Sith, when he?s not practicing the ?superstitious? art of manipulating the Dark Side of the Force or doing the bidding of the Empire, he sits in the shadows and plots new ways to twist Galactic Society to his dark will. Mostly a moral support to Alaska Commons, he spends most of his less sinister efforts working on graduate research in fisheries management.
