Report: Sandusky called 'likely pedophile' in '98

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) ? A psychologist who looked into a 1998 allegation against former Penn State assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky told police at the time that his behavior fit the profile of a likely pedophile, NBC News reported Saturday.

Yet Sandusky was not criminally charged, nor placed on a state registry of suspected child abusers, and prosecutors say he continued assaulting boys for more than a decade until his arrest in November.

NBC obtained a copy of the campus police department's investigatory report on an encounter in which Sandusky was accused of having inappropriate contact with an 11-year-old boy with whom he had showered naked on the Penn State campus.

The police file includes the report of State College psychologist Alycia Chambers, who interviewed and provided counseling to the boy.

"My consultants agree that the incidents meet all of our definitions, based on experience and education, of a likely pedophile's pattern of building trust and gradual introduction of physical touch, within a context of a 'loving,' 'special' relationship," Chambers wrote.

However, a second psychologist, John Seasock, concluded that Sandusky had neither assaulted the boy nor fit the profile of a pedophile.

Chambers and Seasock did not immediately return phone messages left at their offices Saturday.

Centre County prosecutors ultimately decided not to charge Sandusky, and the case was closed until a statewide grand jury accused the retired defensive coordinator of abusing the boy and nine others over a 15-year period. Sandusky, who faces more than 50 counts of child sex abuse, has pleaded innocent and awaits trial.

Chambers' warning to authorities raises new questions about the university's failure to stop Sandusky. Eight of the 10 boys were attacked on campus, prosecutors allege.

In 2002, four years after the 1998 investigation, prosecutors say then-graduate assistant Mike McQueary caught Sandusky sexually assaulting a boy in the football showers. McQueary reported what he saw to coach Joe Paterno, who, in turn, reported the allegation to university officials. But no police investigation was ever done.

Penn State said in a statement Saturday that it would not comment, citing ongoing investigations.

Sandusky's attorney, Joseph Amendola, told The Associated Press on Saturday that Seasock's report was "exculpable" and that the 1998 incident was not as clear-cut as Chambers made it out to be.

"We could get five psychologists, child psychologists, who specialize maybe in sexual dysfunctions or pedophilia look at the same case and talk to the same people and come up with five different conclusions," he said in a phone interview.

The 1998 allegation was the first known complaint made to authorities about Sandusky. A woman called the Penn State police department, saying she was troubled after her 11-year-old son told her he had showered naked with Sandusky on campus.

Prosecutors say Sandusky lathered up the boy ? known as Victim 6 in the state's current criminal case ? bear-hugged him naked from behind, and picked him up and put his head under the shower. Detectives say that later, with police secretly listening in, Sandusky told the boy's mother the joint shower had been a mistake, and blurted: "I wish I were dead."

The woman's complaint triggered a separate review by the state Department of Public Welfare, which found no indication of abuse by Sandusky.

But state welfare department investigator Jerry Lauro told AP in December that he didn't have access to the criminal investigative file. On Wednesday, he told The Patriot-News of Harrisburg that he never would have closed the case had he seen the reports from Chambers and the second psychologist, Seasock.

"The course of history could have been changed," Lauro told the newspaper, which first reported the existence of the twin psychological reports.

"The conclusions (Chambers) had drawn in her report were pretty damaging," Lauro told the paper. "I would have made a different decision. ... It's unbelievable, and it gets my blood pressure going when I think about it."

Seasock, who worked with Centre County Office of Children and Youth Services, interviewed the boy for an hour and wrote in his report ? also included in the police file obtained by NBC ? that he did not find any evidence of "grooming" or "inappropriate sexual behavior" by Sandusky.

"All the interactions reported by (the boy) can be typically defined as normal between a healthy adult and a young adolescent male," Seasock wrote.

Seasock, however, did not review Chambers' report or prior interviews with the boy before submitting his own report, the police report indicates, nor did he elicit key details, including the fact that Sandusky had kissed the boy and told him he loved him.

Amendola said that Chambers has refused to talk to the defense, but that he would try anew in light of the NBC report.

"Any argument the commonwealth had about privilege is out the window," said Amendola. He said he found the timing of the NBC report curious because it came several days after a judge ordered the attorney general to turn over the psychological reports to the defense unless prosecutors could persuade the court they are not subject to disclosure.

Chambers told NBC in an interview that she was horrified to learn that Sandusky allegedly continued assaulting boys long after she warned Penn State authorities about him.

"I was horrified to know that there were so many other innocent boys who had been subject to this, who had their hearts and minds confused, their bodies violated. It's unspeakable," she said.

Chambers told NBC her 1998 investigation found "behavior that was consistent with a predator, a male predator, a pedophile."

Venezuela court: news media should back up reports

CARACAS, Venezuela (AP) ? Public warnings by critics of Venezuela's government about possible pollution of drinking water has brought a court order that the country's news media must back up any reports on the subject with hard data.

The court order announced Thursday was condemned by a group of Venezuelan journalists and news media union leaders who called it a violation of free speech.

The Prosecutor General's Office said the court issued an order stating that news outlets should act responsibly when reporting on accusations of contaminated water. It said news reports on the subject should contain "truthful technical support backed by a competent institution."

The measure came two days after President Hugo Chavez called for judicial authorities to investigate the actions of government opponents and news organizations that had raised concerns about possible pollution in rivers and a lake that supply drinking water plants for parts of central Venezuela and Caracas.

Chavez called the claims "war propaganda" and "terrorism" by his opponents.

"It's a big lie," the president said. "We have to act with respect to this, at least open an investigation and summon those who are saying this ... to ask them for evidence."

On Wednesday, Prosecutor General Luisa Ortega said her office had opened an investigation into complaints of water contamination several days earlier at the request of three Venezuelans who complained about news coverage of the issue. Her office asked the court to step in.

Ortega defended the court order Thursday, saying it aims to ensure "objective, truthful and opportune information."

Opposition presidential candidate Henrique Capriles condemned the court's action, calling it highly unusual.

"The problem of pollution can't be resolved by generating decisions in the courts to cover up complaints made by the community," Capriles told reporters.

The press freedom organization Reporters Without Borders also strongly criticized the court's stance.

"This is just politically motivated censorship," the organization said in a statement. "When the authorities are unnerved by a story like this, they tend to brand it as an attempt to 'destabilize' public order. Is the public so incapable of forming its own opinion?"

Don Draper in "a different place" as 'Mad Men' returns

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - The creator of stylish Emmy-winning drama "Mad Men" is full of anticipation. And also a teeny bit worried.

The 1960s advertising series returns to U.S. television screens on Sunday after a 17 month-absence stemming from a contract dispute between Weiner and cable channel AMC.

"That's a lifetime in an era of the 24-hour news cycle, and no-one is more aware of it than its creator Matthew Weiner, who told Reuters he decided to do a two-hour premiere because "I have been worried about it (the long gap) the whole time."

"I want people to see it already and I am excited that they seem to be excited," Weiner said in an interview, explaining the longer premiere "was a calculated desire to give the audience a bigger, better, super-sized dose of the show and get them into it right away. And also to say, 'I value you'."

But Weiner, who in 2010 left TV audiences with brilliant but mysterious ad executive Don Draper (Jon Hamm) suddenly proposing to his beautiful young secretary Megan Calvet (Jessica Pare), isn't prepared to say much about the upcoming Season 5. Not even what year it is set in.

All Weiner will reveal is that the new season will be very different, and that after the personal struggles that befell Draper when we last saw him, the enigmatic creative director is "in the next part of his life, good or bad."

"As it relates to the business and his personal life, Don is in a different place. That is the story I want to tell. You have to be prepared that this season is going to be about something different," he said.

Teasers, trailers and previews are not favored by Weiner, partly because he savors surprising fans of the show, but also because much of the fascination of "Mad Men" lies in the sub-text and in the slow-burning development of the show's myriad characters.

"The show has a lot of tension, and some of it is based on not knowing," Weiner said. "This is a commercial property whose success is tied to its mystery and there is very little entertainment out there that provides this surprise.

"Also I don't have giant nuclear bombs, and plane hijackings and bloodbaths. I have a story on a human level so that things that seem inconsequential like, 'When is it taking place?' and 'What is the state of Don's personal life?' - that is a lot of story."

Season 4 of "Mad Men" - which like its three previous seasons won the Emmy Award for best TV drama series - ended with Draper's out of the blue engagement, a promotion and a pregnancy for Joan Harris (Christina Hendricks), the loss of the ad agency's biggest account, and a drastic staff downsizing.

INVIGORATED AFTER LONG BREAK

Weiner predicted that after the second episode of Season 5, the audience "will be 'What happened?! Where is everything from last year?!'. And then by the third episode, they will start to see that this is a new story and they will hopefully get into it."

Far from being depressed by the protracted negotiations with AMC in 2010 that briefly threatened the survival of the show, Weiner said that he, the cast and crew went back to work invigorated, and with the assurance of three more seasons.

The return of "Mad Men" has been accompanied by a huge advertising campaign and promotions, ranging from a line of 1960s inspired clothing for retail chain Banana Republic to a retro edition of Newsweek magazine featuring ads with a 1960s look.

Despite drawing a regular U.S. audience of under four million viewers, the series has also sparked new interest in 1960s design and architecture since it first appeared in 2007.

It has also inspired a slew of 1960s TV shows, including the short-lived and controversial 2011 drama series "The Playboy Club", and "Pan Am", which is set around the dawn of the commercial jet age.

"I love this period and it was forgotten by America and I feel happy that I got to be part of something that reminded people of it," Weiner concluded about the renewed love affair with all things 60s.

But apart from its meticulous attention to detail, "Mad Men" is more than eye candy for nostalgia seekers.

"I was a little surprised at what people thought 'Mad Men' was, when I saw these other shows. They thought it was just a collection of clothing and style and that you could put it in any genre. That is not really what is unique about this show.

"Maybe 1963 has become a big part of our culture and our clothing and our interest right now," Weiner said. "But 'Mad Men' is moving on."

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Too often, people pass a cardiac checkup only to collapse with a heart attack days later. Now scientists have found a clue that one day may help doctors determine if a heart attack is imminent, in hopes of preventing it.

Most heart attacks happen when fatty deposits in an artery burst open, and a blood clot then forms to seal the break. If the clot is too big, it blocks off blood flow.

The problem: Today's best tests can't predict when that's about to happen.

"We don't have a way to get at whether an artery's going to crack, the precursor to a heart attack," said Dr. Eric Topol, director of California's Scripps Translational Science Institute.

Wednesday, Scripps researchers reported a new lead ? by searching people's blood for cells that appear to flake off the lining of a severely diseased artery.

Topol's team measured high levels of those cells, deformed ones, floating in the blood of 50 people who'd just had a heart attack. The research is reported in the journal Science Translational Medicine.

Next, Topol said his team soon will begin needed studies to learn how early those cells might appear before a heart attack, and if spotting them could allow use of clot-preventing drugs to ward off damage. Some San Diego emergency rooms will study an experimental blood test with chest-pain sufferers whose standard exams found no evidence of a heart attack, he said.

Don't expect a test to predict heart attacks any time soon ? a lot more research is needed, caution heart specialists not involved with the study. But they're intrigued.

"This study is pretty exciting," said Dr. Douglas Zipes of Indiana University and past president of the American College of Cardiology. It suggests those cells are harmed "not just in the minutes prior" to a heart attack, he said, "but probably hours, maybe even days" earlier.

"It's a neat, provocative first step," added Dr. William C. Little, cardiology chief at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center. "But it is not a biomarker ready for prime time."

About 935,000 people in the U.S. have a heart attack every year, according to government figures. Doctors can tell who's at risk: People with high blood pressure and cholesterol, who smoke, have diabetes, are overweight or sedentary.

But there's no way to tell when a heart attack is imminent. Tests can spot that an artery is narrowing, or if a heart attack is under way or already has damaged the heart muscle. They can't tell if the plaque inside arteries is poised to rupture.

So it's not that uncommon for someone to suffer a heart attack shortly after passing a stress test or being told that their chest pain was nothing to worry about.

Wednesday's study, funded by the National Institutes of Health, investigated cells shed from the endothelium, or the lining of blood vessels, into the bloodstream. They're called "circulating endothelial cells."

First, Topol's team paired with Veridex LLC, a Johnson & Johnson unit that makes technology used to find cancer cells floating in blood. Could it find these cardiovascular cells, too?

The team took blood samples from 50 heart attack patients ? before they had any artery-disturbing tests or treatments ? and from 44 healthy volunteers. They counted lots of the endothelial cells floating in the heart attack victims' blood, and very little in the healthy people's blood.

The big surprise: The cells in the heart patients were grossly deformed. "Sick cells," is how Topol describes them.

The study couldn't tell when those abnormal cells first appeared ? and that's key, said Wake Forest's Little. It's not clear how many heart attacks happen too suddenly for any warning period.

But Topol theorizes there are plaques that break apart gradually and may shed these cells for up to two weeks before the heart attack. He cites autopsy studies that found people's arteries healed several plaque ruptures before the final one that killed them.

Topol said Scripps and Veridex have filed for a patent for a blood test to detect the abnormal cells.

US scientist helps lead international study of ocean value

Professor Robert Diaz of the Virginia Institute of Marine Science, College of William and Mary, is a co-editor of "Valuing the Ocean" a major new study by an international team of scientists and economists that attempts to measure the ocean's monetary value and to tally the costs and savings associated with human decisions affecting ocean health.

The study estimates that if human impacts on the ocean continue unabated, declines in ocean health and services will cost the global economy $428 billion per year by 2050, and $1.979 trillion per year by 2100. Alternatively, steps to reduce these impacts could save more than a trillion dollars per year by 2100, reducing the cost of human impacts to $612 billion.

Diaz says the study report "describes the state of the science for six threats to the global ocean, what can happen if all these threats act together, and the economic consequences of taking or not taking action." He notes that the study is unique in stressing the interactions between and among multiple threats, which include acidification, low-oxygen "dead zones," overfishing, pollution, sea-level rise, and warming.

In addition to co-editing the 300-page study, Diaz is a lead author on the chapters that monetize the impacts of dead zones and the combined effects of multiple stressors. Research by Diaz and colleagues shows that over-fertilization of ocean waters has led to a sharp increase in the number, size, and duration of low-oxygen dead zones around the world over the last 50 years, which could lead to major impacts on fisheries. The study estimates an annual decrease in global fisheries value of $88 billion by 2050, and $343 billion by 2100, unless steps are taken to reduce nutrient inputs and global warming. Warmer water holds less oxygen, thereby intensifying dead zones.
