South Africa is coming to terms with the shooting of 34 miners as frantic wives search for missing loved ones in hospitals and President Jacob Zuma rushes home from a regional summit.

Some miners now say they will fight to the death.

Police Chief Mangwashi Victoria Phiyega says yesterday's clash was a dark day for South Africa and it is not the time for pointing fingers.

But people have compared the shootings to apartheid-era violence, and political parties and trade unions are demanding an investigation.
