Prostitution sting lures woman straight to police

SALEM, Ore. (AP) ? Authorities say a 20-year-old Portland woman drove 50 miles to reach the man she thought was her client after being solicited for prostitution through phone and text messages.

But there was something unusual about the destination: It was the Salem Police Department.

Stranger still, police say the woman walked past several uniformed officers and clearly marked signs reading "Salem Police Department" before arriving at an unmarked door, where they say she attempted to contact the man she thought was her client.

Instead, she was arrested. The phone and text messages were part of a sting operation by Salem police detectives, who first identified the woman through a website.

The Jan. 11 arrest led to charges of prostitution and promoting prostitution for Christal D. Smith of Portland.

An attorney for Smith couldn't be found Thursday afternoon.

No Comments - Reno Tahoe Real Estate News

I just did an MLS search for all single family homes available in the entire Reno-Sparks market from Washoe Valley to Cold Springs and only 10 listings turned up under $100,000.??? Looking a little deeper I found that there are only 41 homes between $100,000 and $150,000 and 49 homes between $150,000 and $200,000.?? That?s only 100 homes on the market under $200,000.? There are approximately 1,950 REALTORS in the Reno-Sparks Association of REALTORS.? If half of the agents in the area were to have 1 buyer looking to buy in the under $200,000 price range then we would have 975 buyers and only 100 homes.? That?s overwhelming.? If you add investors who are looking to buy up anything they can get their hands on this really becomes a very large supply and demand imbalance.

So where have all the homes for sale gone?? Only 18 of the 100 homes on the market are REO or bank owned listings.? Where has all the bank?s inventory gone?? New foreclosures remain low due to AB284 and the National Mortgage Settlement.? Over the past 6 months the number of properties taken back into bank inventory only average 75 homes per month with only an average of 48 new REO listings per month (Source: Ticor Title).

Short sales only account for 24 of the 100 homes available under $200,000.? So why aren?t there more short sales out there?? Good question.? There has never been a better time to do a short sale than this year.? The Mortgage Debt Forgiveness Act has been extended through the end of the year giving many homeowners the ability to escape huge tax liabilities when doing a short sale.? Deficiency waiver or full release from future obligation is provided by lien holders and most banks are urging more homeowners to consider this option verses just not doing anything or walking away.?? One reason more short sales might not be coming onto the market is the lack of urgency to act.? With AB284 and the National Mortgage Settlement so few Notices of Default are being filed on delinquent homeowners that they just simply don?t have any reason to act.

55 of the 100 homes under $200,000 are regular equity position sales.? This is good news for the market and shows that with rising prices comes more homeowner?s getting out of the underwater position and having the ability to now sell.

So what does this all mean?? We have a severe supply and demand imbalance making it a seller?s market.? Sellers it?s a great time to check the value of your home and think about getting it on the market.?? These market conditions bring multiple offers and over bidding on most properties.? For buyers this means patience is in order and knowing what you?re up against.? If you are doing an FHA/Rural loan with no money down and need seller credit for closing costs right now might not be the best time for you to buy.? Your competition has cash and plenty of it or they are getting conventional loans with 20% or more down.? Buyers should expect to get out to see properties quickly.?? Working with an experienced professional in this market is key.

Not a day goes by that I don?t get asked the question, ?When do you think things will change??? If only I had a crystal ball.? We may see some changes if the following things happen ? sellers figure out now is a good time to act and they list their properties, homeowners who are underwater and not paying their mortgage figure out this might be the right time to do something about their situation, our State Legislators clarify AB284 so that banks can proceed with needed foreclosures.? I certainly don?t see a decline in buyer demand anytime soon with interest rates at 3.5-4%.

L&T ad: when health insurance truly takes on your burden | Firstpost

Here?s a story of a man who bought a medical insurance policy. He thought, in an age when medical and hospitalisation costs can cripple your bank balance, it was the prudent decision to make

The consumer buys a policy, feeling better for the investment, feeling gratified that he has done the responsible thing.

A year later, he is unwell and his GP advises a number of tests. The results force the GP to advise hospitalisation and a procedure.

AFP

The consumer is not worried about the attendant costs; after all, he has invested, sensibly, in a policy just for a day like this.

The consumer seems to have no concern for worry. He has his policy documents, a card which seems to allow him to be admitted to a hospital without the payment of deposit, and so on.

Then the problem hits him. The hospital asks him to pay a deposit as the insurance company hasn?t approved of his claim yet. The consumer contacts his agent, the company concerned, and so on, to no avail.

Finally, the consumer pays the deposit, clears the bill and attempts to recover his expenses from the insurance company after discharge from the hospital.

Who hasn?t heard a story like this one?

L&T Insurance has. And they?ve decided, with their communications partner Salt Brand Solutions, that there?s a business opportunity in promising the consumer that their commitments and promises are just that ? commitments and promises.

Here?s a look at one of the TVCs from the campaign they?ve created to hit home the point.

The film begins with a mother telling her son that, if he ate his green vegetables, he would come first in class. The son immediately asks her if she would say the same thing to him ? in writing.

The crux of the commercial is to highlight the fact that there is a difference between just being ?assured? something verbally and the same assurance being made in writing ? which is what L&T Insurance says that they will do.

The film is clear on specifics:

That the company will respond in 6 hours

That if the company does not respond in 6 hours, they will be liable to pay a penalty and, finally,

That L&T will commit to this in writing

In a cluttered environment, with competing insurance companies making similar claims and similar ?promises?, what this commercial does is to say that, all things being the same, their promise is different.

They?ll keep it.

Mozilla reveals Firefox OS Developer Preview Phone

Mozilla reveals Firefox OS Developer Preview Phone

Mozilla said it won't be launching its own hardware to run the in-development Firefox OS when it's finished, but the company has just announced a "Developer Preview Phone" for putting the OS through its paces. It's not quite the same as the mystery device we saw sporting Firefox OS at CES, but its specs seem almost as basic. The handset will feature a 3.5-inch HVGA touchscreen and 3-megapixel camera on the outside, with a 1GHz Snapdragon S1 CPU, half a gig of RAM, 4GB of microSD-expandable storage and WiFi, 2G and 3G antennae inside. Sure, that processor isn't a beast, but an 800MHz S1 does just fine in the Lumia 610. A 1580mAh battery will keep the carrier-unlocked phone running, and Mozilla is promising OTA updates to Firefox OS to keep devs, well, up to date. At the moment, we have no idea how much the phone will cost, but the first units are expected to be available next month.

The developer handset is called the Keon, according to creator Geekphone's website, and while not mentioned in the Mozilla Hacks blog post, it appears to have a more powerful cousin called the Peak. It's got a 4.3-inch qHD screen, 8-megapixel back-facing camera (with flash) and 2-megapixel shooter round the front. A 1.2GHz dual-core Snapdragon S4 CPU and larger 1800mAh battery are within, but storage, RAM and connectivity specs are the same as the smaller Keon. Mozilla may not be formally promoting this as its own dev handset, but it was still included in the picture which accompanied the announcement (see above: the Keon is in orange, the Peak in white). We're getting in contact with Mozilla to clarify, and will update you when we hear back.

Update: Mozilla has confirmed that both the Keon and Peak are official developer devices.

Palliative care physician critiques American attitudes toward death ...

Dr. Ira Byock does his best to breathe life into death. The author of several books on palliative care will speak twice in Oregon this week and, while he commends the state's POLST? program (Physician Orders for Life-Sustaining Treatment),? he challenges baby boomers to "take back" the end of their own lives.

Byock, director of palliative medicine at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, N.H.,? is the author of "The Best Care Possible: A Physician's Quest to Transform Care Through the End of Life" (Avery, $26, 336 pages).? He'll speak in Eugene and Portland as part of Oregon Humanities' Tzedek? Professorship in the Humanities.

In a telephone interview Monday, Byock talked about end-of-life care and what the generation that transformed childbirth might accomplish when it comes to death. His comments have been edited for length and clarity.

Q: Oregon's POLST program has been copied by more than a dozen states and is under consideration in two dozen more. About 88,000? Oregonians have these orders on file, and physician assisted suicide is legal here. Are we ahead of the problem?

A: Oregon has done some good things that are at the leading edge of care, but I wouldn't count legalized suicide among them, frankly. POLST is certainly there, and Oregon hospice programs perform well, compared to the nation.

But as a whole, we continue to be seriously challenged. The large majority of people would like to die at home, surrounded by people they know and love. They want to die gently. But 20 percent of Americans die after an illness that requires an ICU (intensive care unit) stay. Over 50 percent still die in hospitals. Where nursing home use is low, hospital use tends to be high and revolves around the 70 percent figure.

Oregon does better than most, but it's a long way from what is considered optimal.

2012-13 Tzedek Professorship in the Humanities

Who: Dr. Ira Byock, director of palliative medicine, Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center

When and where: 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Lillis Hall 282, University of Oregon, Eugene; and 7 p.m. Friday at UO in Portland, White Stag block, 70 N.W. Couch St.

Cost: free; no reservations required

Sponsors: Oregon Humanities, University of Oregon Humanities Center and St. Johns Booksellers

Q: You have written about "fixable problems" with end-of-life care. What are some examples?

A: People I meet are worrying about medical bills and going through their families' life savings. We make paupers of people whose loved ones are not dying quickly enough. That is a particularly American source of suffering. I have close relatives in Canada, and it's not that (the problem) doesn't exist there, but here, it is endemic.

Being a family caregiver is almost a diagnosis in its own right. Being in a nursing home is a challenge. In general, the majority of nursing homes are woefully understaffed. They are staffed with the best, most loving, caring and committed people. And they have to be because we underpay them. It is really a disgrace. I think that anyone who really wants to advance the dignity of people facing the end of life would join me in doubling staff-to-resident ratios in nursing homes.

Q: Is now the time to try and change the health care system?

We're at a point in the continued maturation of American society, we're poised to take back this last chapter of human life. When we baby boomers were having babies, we, in essence, took back the beginning of life.

Pregnancy and childbirth were considered medical events. But after the emergence of a social-cultural movement, childbirth became, first and foremost, personal. Initially, there was resistance from the medical establishment. You couldn't have fathers in the delivery room. They'd fall over and hurt themselves. Now we think it's odd if a father isn't in the delivery room.

Q: Americans used to die at home. Why is that so rare these days?

A: People have difficulty getting off work to care for someone who is dying. Family members I meet are working two jobs. And we layer on highly complex care for someone at the end of life.

The power of medicine is wonderful. It's cured so many diseases. Our lives are longer and we live better for it. But it's failed to make one person immortal. People are sicker before they die now. People live with two or three diagnoses, any of which might have killed them before. This is all a good thing, but it is unprecedented.

Q: And we're unprepared for it?

A: We have to also build wholesome, well-supported off ramps. We haven't done that. We still try to die with our boots and makeup on or in the throes of life-saving treatments.

It's time for us, as a society, to grow the rest of the way up. We're like early teens: angry, suspicious of our authorities, reacting in a primitive kind of way. We need a stronger citizen consumer movement.

Wisconsin Humane Society urging pet owners to be proactive ... - WITI

Posted on: 5:29 pm, January 20, 2013, by Katie DeLong, updated on: 08:11pm, January 20, 2013

pets

MILWAUKEE (WITI) ? With temperatures falling and wind chill advisories in effect for early this week, the Wisconsin Humane Society is urging pet owners to take proactive measures to keep pets safe.?

  • Keep your animals inside. Even Northern Breed dogs like Malamutes and Chow Chows need heated, comfortable shelter away from bitter cold temperatures and high winds to stay safe. Only take your dogs outside long enough to relieve him/herself and keep cats indoors at all times.
  • If you see spilled antifreeze, clean it up. The sweet taste of this lethal poison actually attracts animals. Use more animal-friendly formulations of products if possible, such as propylene glycol instead of ethylene glycol.
  • Always keep your dog leashed on snow and ice. Despite their powerful noses dogs often lose their scent in the snow and ice, and can easily become lost.
  • Never leave your companion animal alone in the car, especially in cold weather. The car can quickly become a refrigerator and your beloved animal can freeze to death.
  • When your dog comes in out of the rain, snow or ice, thoroughly wipe off his or her legs, feet and stomach. Salt and antifreeze can kill dogs, so it is very important that these harmful substances are wiped off before your dog has a chance to lick them off his or her own paws. The Wisconsin Humane Society sells booties that can be worn by dogs to help prevent salt and antifreeze from sticking to paw pads. Also, pay special attention to your canine?s paw pads. Snow and ice caught between the pads can make them bleed.
  • Before you start your car, beep your horn several times. Cats often look for warm places to rest, and the hood of your car or even underneath the vehicle might be options for them. By honking your horn, cats will be alerted to run away.
  • The cold weather typically means the furnace is cranked up. It?s dangerous for animals to rest under or near a radiator or other heating system. Consider placing an appropriate cover that is especially made for heating systems so animals can be safe from these areas. Also, find a warm place for your furry friend to sleep ? away from heaters, but not near a cold draft.

Christians in Pakistan are the least educated Pakistanis

A break down of statistics reveals that Christians in Pakistan are the least educated community of Pakistan.?

This analysis is based on a research work by Pehchaan Foundation, an organization which is striving to raise the standard of living of the religious minorities in Pakistan. It has been marked down, that the Christians in Pakistan are the least educated Pakistanis.

?

Even though Christian missionary schools have been instrumental in the educational setup of Pakistanyet the Christians are deprived of education. At the time of establishment of Pakistan, these Missionary schools were the foremost source of learning and vocational training. ?By the passage of time, government owned schools started to outdo these admired institutions. Nonetheless, missionary institutions like Convent, Cathedral and Convent of Jesus and Marry are still highly esteemed institutes of the country.

?

Despite the fact that some of the most eminent educational institutions owe to Christian missionary organizations, the Christian community of Pakistan ranks the lowest amongst the educated masses of ?Pakistan. An assortment of up to date facts provided by Dr. John Patrick reveal that:

?

- 6% Christians inPakistanhave primary education.
?
- 4% Christians inPakistanhave High School education
?
- 1% Christians inPakistanhave College education
?
- 0.5% Christians inPakistanhave Professional education

The gravity of this matter can be further enlightened by regarding above mentioned statistics to be a point of reference. ?Taken for granted, that Christians comprise 2% of total population of Pakistan, in that case, they account for approximately for 4.5 million. Applying the above mentioned stats to this figure, we come to a conclusion that only 500,000 or 0.5 million have acquired some sort of education. The left over 4 million Christians in Pakistan are absolutely illiterate and uneducated. Putting this crouched number in percentage crafts mere 11.5% of total Christian population of Pakistan. This colossal figure of untaught Christians is indubitably more than total population of some other countries of the world. The neglect of education of ?Christians in Pakistan is one of the root causes of social and financial decline of the Christian Community in Pakistan. This somber issue requires attention from the Government of Pakistan and at the same time from the missionary schools as well; requiring diligent efforts from the Christian leaders of Pakistan.

?

The Pehchaan Foundation has focused on the promotion of education by dint of the Pehchaan Scholarshp programs. ?The foundation continues to create a sense of awareness amongst the minorities, regarding the ignorance of education and its overwhelming effects.

WASHINGTON (AP) ? On the brink of a second term, President Barack Obama invoked Martin Luther King Jr.'s commitment to service Saturday as inauguration-goers flocked to the capital city for a distinctly American celebration including an oath-taking as old as the republic, a splashy parade and partying enough to last four years.

"I think we're on the cusp of some really great things," Vice President Joe Biden predicted for a country still recovering from a deep recession.

Freshly built inaugural stands at the Capitol gleamed white in the sun, and hundreds of chairs for special guests were set out on the lawn that spills down toward the National Mall as the president and vice president began their inauguration weekend.

Julius Cherry, in town from Sacramento, Calif., brought his family to the foot of the Capitol to see the area where their official tickets will let them watch the public ceremonies on Monday.

"There were people who said they'd never vote for an African-American president," the 58-year-old lawyer said. "Now they've voted for him twice, and he won the popular vote and the electoral vote. That says something about his policies and his team."

"And the country," added Cherry's wife, Donna.

Said Erika Goergen, from the Midwest and attending college locally: "It's amazing to be here right now."

Officials estimated that as many as 800,000 people will attend Monday's public ceremonies. That's more than live in the city, if far fewer than the 1.8 million who were at Obama's first inauguration in 2009.

The president made only a glancing reference to race as he spoke at an elementary school not far from the White House after he and first lady Michelle Obama stained a bookcase as part of a national service event organized by the inaugural committee.

"We think about not so much the inauguration, but we think about this is Dr. King's birthday we're going to be celebrating this weekend," the president said.

"He said everybody wants to be first, everybody wants to be a drum major. But if you're going to be a drum major, be a drum major for service, be a drum major for justice, be a drum major for looking out for other people," Obama said of the civil rights leader whose birthday is celebrated as a national holiday on Monday.

Because the date for inauguration set in the Constitution, Jan. 20, falls on a Sunday this year, Obama and Biden were to be sworn in for second terms in separate, private ceremonies on Sunday.

The public ceremonies are set for Monday, when Obama will take the oath of office at noon, then deliver an inaugural address before a large crowd and a national television audience in the millions.

The traditional lunch with lawmakers in the Capitol follows, and the inaugural parade down Pennsylvania Avenue toward the White House. There, a reviewing stand was adorned with the presidential seal and equipped with seats enough for Obama and other dignitaries to watch in relative comfort as military units, marching bands, floats and thousands of participants go past. A pair of inauguration balls will cap the day, including one with a guest list that runs to 40,000 names.

A select few ? those who donated as much as $1 million to defray inauguration expenses ? received special access to public as well as invitation-only receptions and parties.

The second term begins in circumstances different in many ways from the first, but familiar in others.

The economy, then in the grip of a fierce and deepening recession, is now recovering slowly as unemployment recedes and stocks flirt with five-year highs. The health care legislation that Obama urged Congress to enact in his first inaugural address is the law of the land, courtesy of a split ruling by the Supreme Court.

Al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden is dead at the hands of U.S. special operations forces. But the organization he inspired is far from moribund, as demonstrated by the just-ended kidnapping episode Saturday at an Algerian natural gas complex that, according to the Algerian government, left at least 23 hostages dead. The U.S. on Friday acknowledged one American death.

When Obama took office in 2009, his Democratic allies held control of Congress.

Now, divided government rules, and Republicans who control the House lead the way in insisting the administration agree to spending cuts that will reduce soaring federal deficits. Obama has said he is ready to compromise on that.

At the outset of a second term, he also wants Congress to overhaul the nation's immigration laws and take steps to reduce gun violence in the wake of the shooting last month in Newtown., Conn., that left 20 elementary school children dead.

Yet for once, politics seemed to edge ever so slightly into the background in the most political of cities.

Former first daughter Chelsea Clinton headlined a National Day of Service gathering under a tent on the National Mall, where she said she had been inspired by her grandmother, as well as her famous parents. She urged her audience to become part of a "chain of service" by helping the less fortunate.

Biden and his wife, Jill, spent time at an armory pitching in as volunteers packed 100,000 care kits for deployed members of the military, wounded warriors, veterans and first responders.

Biden credited former President George H. W. Bush, a Republican, for starting the "Points of Light" program, which was a sponsor of the event. He said service was an antidote to "the coarsening of our culture. We've got to get back to reaching out to people."

In the evening, Mrs. Obama and Mrs. Biden were hosting the Kids' Inaugural Concert, an event paying special tribute to military spouses and children.

Why gun groups say 'no way' to assault weapons ban

By Matthew DeLuca, Staff Writer, NBC News

With assault weapons firmly in the crosshairs of state and federal lawmakers, gun-rights groups say they are not willing to give an inch when it comes to restricting access to the weapon of choice in recent mass shootings.

From arguments over what exactly defines an assault weapon to enthusiasts who say the guns are just plain fun to shoot, defenders of assault weapons say President Obama and others are misguided in their focus on banning them.

?I can?t possibly imagine what logic people are following that somehow another law, just one more law, will solve these issues,? said Keith Morgan, president of the West Virginia Citizens Defense League, a pro-gun group.

?People are killed in greater number by cars, bats, hammers, hands, and feet,? he added. ?Examining the tool and attempting to ban the tool will have absolutely no effect. We?re dealing with a people problem. We?ve got to find a people solution.?

AR-15 style rifles are among the most popular guns in America and were used by both accused Aurora movie theater shooter James Holmes and Connecticut gunman Adam Lanza. But gun-rights advocates like Morgan argue that despite the guns? roles in high-profile mass killings, they are used in a relatively small number of homicides.

First Read: Obama set to go big on guns

According to the FBI?s Unified Crime Report for 2011, handguns were used 6,220 of the 12,664 homicides reported. Rifles accounted for 323 homicides, with knives and other unnamed firearms making up most of the rest.

Other gun-rights advocates are willing to entertain a conversation about assault weapons, but they remain dubious.

?If someone can show me how it can save lives, we?ll look at anything,? said Jim Irvine, chairman of the Buckeye Firearms Association. He remains unconvinced, however, that an assault weapons ban would have done anything to prevent mass shootings like that in Newtown, Conn.

?I don?t like a bunch of dead kids, so I don?t see why we waste time on stale policies,? Irvine said.

The debate about what works will play out in the halls of Congress as well as state capitals, but also?in American living rooms.

A survey released this week by the Pew Research Center found generous support among most Americans for at least some new controls on guns. The poll found that a majority of the public ? 55 percent ? would favor a ban on assault weapons. That support broke somewhat along party lines, with 69 percent of Democrats and 44 percent of Republicans favoring a legislation restricting assault weapons.

California, Connecticut, Hawaii, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, and New York already place some prohibitions on assault weapons.

Support soars for tougher gun laws, surveys show

In California, which has some of the nation?s toughest regulations on assault weapons, the law lists 75 assault weapon types by name, according to the Law Center to Prevent Gun Violence. California is also one of three states that employ a ?one-feature? test to identify assault weapons, banning all weapons that have one military-style feature, such as a pistol grip or telescoping stock.

Some pro-gun activists, like Paul Valone of Grass Roots North Carolina, dismiss the category of assault weapons entirely.

?It?s relatively easy to circumvent a firearms ban based on cosmetic features. A pistol grip does not change the function of the firearm,? Valone said. ?None of these things make any difference whatsoever.?

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo signed a law on Tuesday that tightened the state?s existing ban on assault weapons by applying the one-feature test.

The last federal ban on assault weapons lapsed in 2004. It was criticized by gun control proponents for allowing gun makers to easily circumvent restrictions may making small changes to existing models of rifles. That law required guns to have two military-style features to be considered assault weapons.

Ross Meyer, a manager at Gun World and Archery, a Nevada gun store, said some of his customers buy AR-style weapons for defense ? but many also simply enjoy shooting the guns.

Gun-rights groups: Our 'backs are against the wall'

?A lot of them, it?s just kind of fun to go out and shoot,? said Meyer. His store sold out of the 150 AR-style weapons it had in stock within three days of the shooting in Newtown. ?And then also the high-capacity magazine, that?s fun to have.?

?Semi-autos are just one of the most fun to go out and shoot when it comes to the recreation of it,? Meyer said.

Activists contend that there?s no political gain for them in sitting down at the table to discuss restrictions on assault weapons.

?As a strategic measure, it would be a horrific mistake for Republicans to play this game again,? said Michael Hammond, legislative consultant for Gun Owners of America, a national pro-gun rights group that claims 300,000 members.

Longtime conservative activist Larry Hunter is a co-organizer of Gun Appreciation Day. The day, which Hunter said is intended to promote Second Amendment rights, is scheduled for January 19. Hunter sees any ban on assault weapons as an encroachment on American?s constitutional rights.

?I hope it?s a non-starter,? Hunter said of any new ban on assault weapons. ?But I think the world has changed so dramatically since it was first enacted and then allowed to expire, we have to take very seriously the possibility that they will do something.?

Michael Johnson released by Manchester City after Twitter picture emerges

MANCHESTER CITY have released former starlet Michael Johnson.

A picture emerged on Twitter last night of the injury-hit midfielder looking bloated in a takeaway.

And City today revealed that Johnson was paid off and booted out just before Christmas.

The 24-year-old last appeared for the Premier League champions as a second-half substitute in a Carling Cup tie against Scunthorpe in October 2009.

HOT PROSPECT ... Michael Johnson competes with Man Utd's Carlos Tevez in August 2007

He had been tipped to be a future England captain after making his debut in the 2006-07 season under Stuart Pearce.

But the following campaign Johnson suffered an abdominal injury and had to undergo a double-hernia operation.

He signed a new five-year deal with City in September 2008 but his injury problems resurfaced and sidelined him for nearly a year.

Johnson played just once in the 2009-10 season and then a serious knee injury ruled him out of the whole of 2010-11.

He was sent to Leicester on a season-long loan in July 2011 but the Foxes sent him back midway through his spell.

Johnson hit the headlines again last May after crashing his car in Manchester.

And the former England Under-21 star was subsequently convicted of two drink-driving offences leading to a ?5,500 fine and three-year driving ban.

Johnson?s former City team-mate Joey Barton tweeted: ?Just read about young Michael Johnson at Man City. So sad. Had the world at his feet. Thats what too much pressure can do to young lads.?

Building electronics from the ground up

Jan. 14, 2013 ? There's hardly a moment in modern life that doesn't involve electronic devices, whether they're guiding you to a destination by GPS or deciding which incoming messages merit a beep, ring or vibration. But our expectation that the next shopping season will inevitably offer an upgrade to more-powerful gadgets largely depends on size -- namely, the ability of the industry to shrink transistors so that more can fit on ever-tinier chip surfaces.

Engineers have been up to the task of electronics miniaturization for decades now, and the principle that the computer industry will be able to do it on a regular schedule -- as codified in Moore's Law -- won't come into doubt any time soon, thanks to researchers like the University of South Carolina's Chuanbing Tang.

Tang is a leader in constructing miniscule structures from the bottom up, rather than the top down. Currently, modern electronics are primarily fabricated by the latter method: the smooth surface of a starting material -- say, a wafer of silicon -- is etched through micro- or nanolithography to establish a pattern on it. The top-down method might involve a prefabricated template, such as a photomask, to establish the pattern. But the approach is becoming more and more challenging, because reducing the size of the features on the requisite templates is getting extremely expensive as engineers work their way further down the nanoscale. "Going from 500 to sub-30 nanometers is cost prohibitive for large-scale production," said Tang, an assistant professor in the department of chemistry and biochemistry in USC's College of Arts and Sciences.

As a chemist, Tang uses a bottom-up approach: he works with the individual molecules that go onto a surface, coaxing them to self-arrange into the patterns needed. One established method of doing this involves block copolymers, in which a polymer chain is made up of two or more sections of different polymerized monomers.

If the different block sections are properly designed, the blocks will self-aggregate when placed on a surface, and the aggregation can be harnessed to create desirable patterns on the nanoscale without the need for any templates. Di-block copolymers of poly(ethylene oxide) and polystyrene, for example, have been used to construct highly ordered arrays of perpendicular cylinders of nanoscale materials. Solvent evaporation, or annealing, of these polymers on surfaces exerts an external directional field that can enhance the patterning process and create nearly defect-free arrays.

Tang's laboratory just published a paper for the special "Emerging Investigators 2013" issue of the journal Chemical Communications that takes this method to a new level. Working together with graduate student Christopher Hardy, Tang led a team that fabricated nanoparticles of pure, crystalline iron oxide with controlled size and spacing on silicon wafers by covalently incorporating a ferrocene moiety into a tri-block copolymer.

Incorporating metals into nanoscale designs is crucial for fabricating electronic devices, and Tang's method is a step forward for the field. Because ferrocene is covalently bonded to the block copolymer, there is no need for a complexation step to add a metal-containing compound to the surface -- a burdensome requirement of most previous methods. Moreover, their technique is a step beyond related polymer systems that contain covalent ferrocenylsilane linkages, in which removal of the organic components leaves behind silicon oxide as an impurity in the metal oxide.

The technique is a promising addition to the available tools for addressing the chronic need to decrease the size of electronic components. "The industry won't replace top-down methods," Tang said, "but they plan to use bottom-up together with the existing top-down methods soon."

There's versatility in the technique as well. "Here we use a ferrocene-containing polymer, which we convert into the inorganic iron oxide. But if we replace the ferrocene in the polymer with carbon precursor, we could make a perpendicular carbon nanorod, which would have a lot of potential uses," Tang said. "Or we can incorporate a semi-conducting polymer, like polythiophene, which would be very useful in solar cell applications."

The work was supported by Semiconductor Research Corporation (Task ID 2222.001) and National Science Foundation (CHE-1151479).

UK won't let British veterans accept Russian medal

LONDON (AP) ? Reay Clarke, who risked his life on World War II Arctic convoys, doesn't understand why the British government wants him and other elderly veterans to turn down a medal for bravery offered by the Russian government.

"I honestly feel sore about it," said Clarke, 89. "I think it's disgraceful that we can't just say yes to the Russians and tell them to go ahead and issue the medal. I think they are kind and thoughtful to remember what we did. We should just say, 'Thank you very much.'"

The Foreign and Commonwealth Office said Friday that British sailors cannot accept the Ushakov Medal because they are in line to get a medal from the British government, and also because the events took place more than five years ago.

It is not surprising that the Russian government wants to honor ? again ? the sailors who participated in the convoys, which helped bring vital equipment to Soviet troops fighting a desperate battle against Hitler's troops on the eastern front.

The weapons they delivered, including more than 7,500 fighter planes and 5,000 anti-tank guns, helped turn back Hitler's invading forces, altering the course of the war, said Jacky Brookes, a manager of the Russia Arctic Convoy Museum Project, which plans to build a museum at the spot in northwest Scotland where the convoys were based.

"There were some 3,000 casualties," she said. "Winston Churchill called it the worst journey in the world. Hitler was keen to sink as many of them as he could. It was an awful experience ? they were attacked by U-boats, and ships, and from the air as well. Plus the weather was atrocious. A lot of people just perished from the cold."

Brookes also feels the government should have allowed the men to receive the Ushakov Medal. She said about 400 are still alive.

"We think they should be allowed to wear it," she said. "We support any recognition for these brave men, they fought so hard, and many gave the ultimate sacrifice."

She said the Russian government had periodically honored the Arctic convoy veterans from Britain and other nations.

In a statement, Britain's Foreign Office said it very much appreciates the Russian government's wish to recognize the veterans. It said, however, that the rules on accepting foreign awards are clear.

Prime Minister David Cameron announced last month a medal will be created and awarded to veterans who were active on the convoys.

But Clarke frets that many veterans will pass away while the details are worked out.

"He's taken an awful long time," he said. "There aren't many of us left."

Ford OpenXC Wants to Bring Android to Your Car

fordsmartcar

At CES 2013 Ford released the Ford OpenXC SDK for Android developers. This SDK is designed to allow smartphone applications to access your car?s sensor data. Before you get too excited, this SDK will not allow your smart phone to actually control your car. So the dream of driving your car from the back seat using your Android phone has yet to be realized. But in the mean time, developers will have the chance to bring a plethora of handy apps into your life that will give you lots of information about your car. The possibilities are endless, and?undoubtedly? clever developers will come up with ideas that are much more creative than anything that has been mentioned so far. But besides being able to check the level of your gas tank before you head out the door to work in the morning, or getting a push notification when your car is due for an oil change, you might also be able to track how your driving habits are effecting your car?s fuel efficiency.

If some of this sounds familiar, it might be because Ford had already?released?the SYNC AppLink API for SmartPhones. This was a proprietary feature that Ford had integrated into some of its newer model cars that would allow users to better ?hands-free use of their smart phone. But the OpenXC SDK, as the name implies, is open source and is available to other car?manufacturers?as well as developers. This is a new approach from the closed ecosystems that most car manufacturers have been developing over the last several years. It seems that Ford is hoping that this SDK can become an industry standard that will allow marketers,?manufactures?and the other ?big data? usual suspects to learn more about our driving habits.

ford-myford-mobile-01

Certainly collecting this level of detailed data will all lead to privacy concerns will need to be addressed. But lets not forget that ?big data? is what has brought us many of the free Google services that most of us can?t imagine living without. And as roads become more congested, traffic engineers and urban planners could have access to?unprecedented?levels of detail that would show them how to design better and safer roads. Not only could this new SDK lead to innovative, useful apps that might save you money, it might even make your commute to work faster.

I think the real question is: how did it take this long for someone to release something like this? Most of the people I know that have a GPS built into their cars?forgo?using it most of the time because Google Maps is so?wildly?superior to the proprietary software that most cars are running these days. Smart phones have so much connectivity and ease of use that even with practically unlimited space and a 1 year production cycle, car?manufactures?have failed to bring most of the basic features that are smart phones have to our dashboard. It?s encouraging to see Ford using an open, collaborative approach to seek to foster innovation, and I can?t wait to see what developers do with these new opportunities.

With Pakistan continuing to show its aggression by breaching the ceasefire number of times in the last few days, India is talking tough. Meanwhile, across the border all efforts are being made to launch yet another terror strike in India. Terror outfits waiting to cross over under protective fire. The region of Krishna Ghati has witnessed sporadic incidents of firing in the last two days. The renewed tensions forcing the Border Security Force (BSF) to roll out its winter strategy as the terror outfits get active exploiting the extreme conditions. The Government also staring right back at Pakistan but questions is being raised over whether India is still soft-peddling with its hostile neighbour or not. Now the big questions is how India will put a hyper-aggressive Pakistan in its place and what are the steps being taken by the Government.

Shifting landscape as Brown mulls Mass. Senate run

BOSTON (AP) ? Scott Brown was a little-known Republican state senator who shocked Massachusetts Democrats three years ago by winning a U.S. Senate seat in a special election that became a national rallying cry for the nascent tea party movement.

Much has changed since then for Brown. In the Senate, he compiled a voting record more moderate than his one-time tea party allies would have liked. Just two months ago, voters said a resounding "no" to giving him a full term.

Now Brown is considering whether to seize a chance to return to the Senate ? in yet another special election ? to take the place of Democratic Sen. John Kerry if he is confirmed as secretary of state. Democrats will be more than ready for Brown this time if he does run.

"The atmosphere would be completely different," said the state Democratic Party chairman, John Walsh. He acknowledged making "unforgivable mistakes" by taking for granted the race in which Brown won the late Sen. Edward M. Kennedy's seat.

"We are not asleep at the switch anymore," Walsh said.

As the Democratic machine begins to stir, national conservative groups active in Brown's first run say they've yet to focus on a Massachusetts Senate election that could be five months away.

"It's a different race," says Amy Kremer, national chairman of the Tea Party Express, which funneled a ton of volunteers and more than $340,000 into Brown's 2010 bid.

"Conservatives in Massachusetts, I'm sure, are excited and want him, but it's definitely not something that people are focused on across the country," Kremer said. "What happened with him in 2010 was it became a nationalized race and people got excited. But right now, it's not on anybody's radar."

Republicans familiar with Brown's thinking expect him to run but say that his candidacy is by no means assured. These Republicans spoke on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to disclose information about Brown's decision-making.

Republicans in Washington see Brown as a chance to take a seat from Democrats, who hold a 55-45 edge in the Senate.

The date of the special election won't be announced until Kerry resigns upon his confirmation as secretary of state. State officials expect the special election as early as June.

Despite the time frame, Brown is in no hurry to make his intentions public, according to his Republican allies. For now, his camp is content to let speculation about his candidacy fuel steady news coverage. Since leaving office Jan. 3, Brown has conferred quietly with Republican operatives Eric Fehrnstrom and Peter Flaherty, senior aides to former GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney.

Brown's allies say he is encouraged that a member of the Kennedy family will not run for the seat. Kennedy's widow, Vicki Kennedy, and Edward Kennedy Jr. have said they would not enter the contest.

Kerry and Democrats in Washington are backing longtime U.S. Rep. Ed Markey, the only announced candidate, although Markey's popularity outside his north-central Massachusetts district is unclear. First elected in 1976, he is already drawing criticism from Massachusetts' small Republican class.

"Ed Markey is an uninspiring, unaccomplished political hack," said Massachusetts-based Republican strategist Ryan Williams, a former Romney aide.

If Brown declines to run, there are other possible Republican candidates in the wings, including former Gov. William Weld, former gubernatorial candidate Charles Baker and recent congressional candidate Richard Tisei.

In January 2010, Brown faced state Attorney General Martha Coakley in a special election called after Kennedy's death the previous year.

With conservatives focusing on a chance to claim the seat Kennedy had held for almost five decades, Brown attacked a favorite conservative target, Obama's health care overhaul, promising to be the pivotal vote to block the plan in a closely divided Senate. However, the Senate approved the bill shortly before the special election, which Brown won.

Brown faced liberal stalwart Elizabeth Warren, a consumer advocate disdained by conservatives, in the 2012 contest for a full term. It became the most expensive Senate contest in the nation. Brown lost to Warren by 8 percentage points.

Intense national interest in both elections helped send lots of money into Brown's campaign treasury. In 2010, more than 60 percent of his contributions came from outside Massachusetts, which was among the highest rates in the nation, according to the Center for Responsive Politics. In the 2012 cycle, as control of the Senate was thought to depend in part on the Massachusetts race, no Senate incumbent raised more out-of-state money than Brown.

Some conservative activists who helped fuel Brown's campaigns have decided that he is not the conservative lawmaker they had hoped he would be.

"He had some bad votes, but he had some good votes," said Tim Phillips, president of Americans for Prosperity, a conservative organization active in electoral politics across the country.

Brown sided with Democrats in supporting Obama's jobs bill and later became one of just three Republicans who voted for the Dodd-Frank law that sought to toughen financial-industry regulations. He also voted for the New START treaty to further limit U.S. and Russian nuclear arsenals.

On one make-or-break issue for tea party activists, Brown remained firm: his opposition to the president's health care overhaul. That issue lost some of its power after its passage by Congress in 2010 and the Supreme Court's decision in June 2012 that it was indeed constitutional.

So far, there's no conservative rallying cry ahead of the 2013 special election. But in a year with few high-profile elections, Republican strategist Ron Kaufman said, "some things become bigger than they are."

"It will be different, but I think that there's still an awful lot of people very, very angry right now at Washington," said Kaufman, Massachusetts' national Republican committeeman. "If they really want to slow down the president, this would be the way to do it."
